Rudyard Kipling never appealed to me when I was younger, but last night as we read another booksale find Animals, Animals by Eric Carle, there were several poems by Kipling, including this one:

Commissariat Camels

We haven't a camelty tune of our own
To help us trollop along,
But every neck is a hair-trombone
(Rtt-ta-ta-ta! is a hair-trombone!)
And this is our marching-song:
Can't! Don't! Shan't! Won't!
Pass it along the line!

Somebody's pack has slid from his back,
'Wish it were only mine!
Somebody's load has tipped off in the road--
Cheer for a halt and a row!
Urrr! Yarrh! Grr! Arrh!
Somebody's catching it now!

Now since this was from his "Parade of Animals" I perceived a strong beat and was reading it in a very strong rhythmic tone, even beating out a tempo. Ds loved it...but is that taking liberties? Am I committing a faux paus?

   I'm sure Kipling would approve. I left high school loathing all poetry but in my early twenties I was stuck one weekend with nothing to read but a volume of Kipling's poetry. It was love at first stanza .

Kipling tends to be very strongly rhythmic. I would have done the same thing. In fact I can remember my mother reading "Gunga Din" to me as a child and tapping out the rhythm as she read.

Thanks, Theresa and Shari. I'm now wondering how I could have missed such great poetry for so long! Ds loves the rhythms, so I'll be sure to keep on bringing different poetry into his "diet"...and expand my own.

I've lost all vocabulary, particularly to poetry. I couldn't remember the word "metre" for the life of me!
