Ladies, I need your help! I'm in a Catholic Mosaic (thank you, Cay) co-op and next week I need an easy and inexpensive craft idea. We have ages 3-10. The littles can just color a picture of a lion or something simple like that. But, I need something a little more for the older kids. Any ideas?

Michaela posted these lion cupcakes several years ago. I did a blog post on them later for Catholic Cuisine for St. Mark's feast day. Lion is s symbol of both. Older students could decorate the plain cupcakes. Any other lion crafts would be good as well for older ones.

I did a roundup of lion crafts on Catholic Icing for St. Mark's feast day. Maybe you can find something there.

This is just off the top of my head....
How about making a book mark by the kids copying their favorite Bible verse onto it. Other options would be to have them copy it in Latin.
My thought is that bookmarks are functional and St. Jerome is know for translating the Bible into Latin.

Bummer...so I guess craft it needs to be...
These are some cute ones I've seen at "Danielle's Place" including:
paper plate & bowl lion
paper bag puppet
noodle lion
And, Betsy, I was thinking along the same lines for a latin translator connection. They could make a flip book with Latin translations - using common scripture or liturgy words.

All of theses ideas are great!!! Lacy, I think the little ones can do the lion craft with the noodle mane.
Betsy, your thoughts are right on for the older kids.  I wanted to do something about his work on the translating of the bible. A bookmark is perfect! I just need to figure out how to get it completed in class. Maybe I can have some verses available to paste along with the word Vulgate.
Mary, the paper bag puppet is a thought for the little ones, too!
My mind is racing!!! Thank you for planting the seeds!

Wonderful ideas! I always like to view artwork and symbolism of the saints to get ideas for arts or crafts.
Web Gallery of Art has dozens of paintings of St. Jerome. He is often portrayed writing or praying with a skull on his table or nearby, showing his contemplation and ascetism. I know the book touches on a lion, but I thought I'd throw in the skull idea!
If you can find a copy, Rumer Godden wrote a delightful book by the same name based on the Legend of St. Jerome. It's all in rhyming verse, and the illustrations are simple drawings in black and white and red. I like to compare different versions of the same story.

I agree on Rumer. Big fan!
St. Jerome translated the Bible into Latin, called the Vulgate version. It was a huge undertaking, taking 15 years. The Old Testament was from Hebrew, and the New Testament from Greek.
Can you imagine? I don't think he had a committee helping him?
Oh, this would be fun to add to your St. Jerome day--what was his full name when Jerome was born?
