Yup. I liked Od Magic and Harrowing the Dragon, by McKillip. Spindle's End and Rose Daughter are both retellings of the Briar Rose fairytale, and are classed as YA. Deerskin, my favourite McKinley book, is a retelling of the story of Donkeyskin, and has some violent and adult themes (so does the original story).

Tad Williams writes adult high fantasy. I'm not sure what to say- do the characters commit immoral acts? Yes, some of them. It's a story about a world where the elves were driven out by humans, and their greatest leader sacrificed himself and let his bitterness and desire for revenge consume him while he searches for a way back in to the world of the living. It's a good read, with complex characters, and would be appropriate for a mature teenager who could handle some ambiguity.

And I just remembered that my husband has just started putting up his fantasy novel on Wattpad. He's done the first draft and I think the first and maybe the second chapter are up!

I used to love reading Vince Flynn novels when I actually had time to read. If he likes Bourne novels, he will like those. Also David Baldacchi is really good. Those are legal thrillers. Robin Cook writes excellent medical thrillers (my husband, the pharmacist, loves those).
