Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was wondering if any of you talented seamstresses had suggestions for a good beginner's sewing book. I never learned to sew, much to the despair of my mother, who made all of her own clothes, including her wedding gown!
Now my 12 year old dd would really like to learn. She even got a sewing machine for Christmas. Does anyone have any thoughts on a good book to start with?

I am using Stitches and Pins with my 11yo dd. It has been really truly helpful and instructive. I assigned the book as technical reading for school, because I wanted to give her an added motivation to persevere if she got stuck. Yesterday she thanked me for doing this and told me she learned so much when she got stuck on the tote bag and had to take it apart 3 times. She now has a beautiful and sturdy bag, but more importantly, she feels so much more confident at the sewing machine.

Here is the link to purchase online, but I got mine at JoAnn's with a 40% off coupon...
