Never seen it with coleslaw.. we always do ruebens with saurkraut.. yummy.

usually, the corned sandwich with the cole slaw is served cold and ungrilled. I chose to heat up the corned beef, melt the swiss, and toast the rye. Yummy, either way.

I have a tip for the Rueben...if you have someone in your family who doesn't like the bite of the kraut, saute it in a pan with a bit of mayo before adding it to the sandwich. Yum again!

Love,

My all time favorite is a grilled turkey with cheese. Even better with some bacon. Also- anything pressed and grilled is sooo good! What is it about the texture of those ripples that makes a sandwich so incredibly yummy??

grilled chicken Gyros made with homemade pita bread and cucumbers= delicious!!

I also love the texture of sprouts on a sandwich!!

Oooooooooooooo, I'm so tempted to purchase a press but talk myself out of it because...I don't know, I'm used to grilling sandwiches and baking sandwiches but I just watched a Bobby Flay cuban sandwich (which looks fabulous) Throwdown and it's ALL about the press.

Mamasue and others with a press, what do you think?

Love,

Lucy, please tell more, especially about the mint jelly and horseradish sauce. Where did you find this sandwich? I don't think I've had mint jelly since I was a kid and my mom put it in the center of pears to serve with lamb (I think.)

Love,

I have a cast iron bacon press, but I'm such a dope, it never occurred to me to make paninis with it. My SIL has an electric panini press that they like a lot. I've also heard you can use a waffle iron with similar results.

This reminds me of a vegetarian sandwich I used to enjoy on visits to Maui: lots of fresh greens, some melted cheese, sprouts, and a whole avocado. The meatiness and fattiness of avocado makes a wonderful substitute for meat. (And I am no vegetarian!)

Other favorites: hot pastrami with melted cheese; pita bread with hummus, artichokes and olives.

Angie, the culinary delights of fish finger sandwich with mint and horseradish is my own invention I think it has to be mint jelly rather than mint sauce because you want the sweetness to contrast with the heat of the horseradish. It is so yummy I want to go and make some now but "sadly" we are having trout tonight so I will have to forgo the pleasure.

Lucy, I am intrigued! So, am I right to assume that you bake fish sticks, place them on sandwich bread, and make a sauce of mint jelly and horseradish mixed together?

While we're at it, what else do you use mint jelly for?

This is very outside of the box for me - love it!

Love,

Usually I would grill (broil?) them, Angie, and then have one slice of bread spread with mint jelly and one with horseradish. and then vary which side I had uppermost as I eat

Mint jelly is also great with cheese in my opinion, as a nice sarnie. Or with lamb, obviously.

Many moons ago, I worked in a deli. My favorite there was the veggie sandwich, and I made one today.

Whole grain bread
cream cheese (spread thinly on both slices)
sliced tomato
sliced cucumber
sliced or mashed avocado
lettuce
alfalfa sprouts

My favorite corned beef is just corned beef, mustard, cheddar.

Meatloaf sandwich:
meatloaf
a little mayo
ketchup
horseradish
swiss

Last summer, I improvised and came up with this one:
chopped apple
crumbled bacon
shredded cheddar
mayo

yes, when i want to be especially well loved, i will sprinkle mini chocolate chips on the peanutbutter & fluff sandwich. it's like a peanut butter s'more, all sticky gooey goodness.

but is really more like "dessert" than anything else.

My Ana who needs extra calories and protein loves these - but we use Sunbutter and Ricemellow fluff. We also grill it so the choc chips (allergy free) melt.

Michiel, your deli sandwich reminded me of our current summer favorite. We've found that, instead of BLT, we prefer bacon, cucumber, and tomato. Nice in the summer because all the ingredients are those we're getting in our CSA box anyway (its a little late/early for lettuce).

We've also done cream cheese and cucumber sandwiches a few times this summer. It is nice and cool and light for a picnic in the heat.

I had the best sandwich last night. I thought about it all day and finally got out to the store to get what I needed for it after the kids were in bed. (definitely a sign of early pregnancy I guess!0

It was rustic bread with pesto and thin slices of mozzarella grilled up like a panini (but I don't have a press, I just made it in the frying pan and pushed down on it with a bowl as it cooked.) It was SO good.

That cream cheese and cucumber sandwich sounds good for breakfast this mroning!

MelissaClaire,

That reminds me of one I came up with this summer.

I've been trying to replace mayo with other/better things. So.....BLT with pesto instead of the mayo. Way better!

What? No one is eating my kids brand new favorite?

Nutella and bacon

It is the only thing that every single one of my kids will eat.

Go figure.

My kids tell me that anything and bacon is good. It's kind of scary, LOL!

You are so right about the press. Any sandwich on the press is awesome. We had Cuban sandwiches last week when the Cards played the Marlins. The press is key, they would not have been the same. I use mine all. the. time.

Now, as for my favorite sandwich. Hot pastrami on rye with swiss and mustard. You can take the girl out of NY, but you can't take the NY out of the girl.

On the press, my favorite right now is provolone with Kalamata olives, roasted red peppers and spinach. Baste the bread with olive oil mixed with garlic, oregano, and basil. YUUUUMMMMM.

My press is actually a waffle maker that has different plates you can take out. It was relatively inexpensive too.
It has flat plates, grill plates and waffle plates.
Definitely one of my favorite appliances!
