Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Some days we read again before bed. This is a different literature book -- The Penderwicks at present. A big thanks to Lissa for the heads up on this book. We are really enjoying it.

Hi all,
I am quoting myself because I thought I should add something about The Penderwicks, for those who are following this thread and might read it or have a child read it based on our recommendations.

I'd just like to give you all a heads up on some concerns I have and why I am glad we are reading it aloud. I am a very strict mom in the area of not allowing my girls to speak to each other harshly. My kids really think that words like "dumb" and "stupid" are sort of like curse words -- we just don't say them. The girls in The Penderwicks are rather free with this sort of negativity--more like my brothers and I were when I was growing up. I am really glad that I am reading aloud so I can edit those parts.

Also, at one point in the book something is said about Jeffrey's mother not wanting people to think that Jeffrey is illegitimate. (She had a short-lived marriage at a very young age.) The author doesn't use those exact words, but that is the essence of it. Anyway, once again there, I was glad that I hadn't just handed this book to my older girls to read on their own.

Just thought I'd let you all know in case others would have concerns about these things. I still really like the book. In fact it is overdue at the library, so we are picking up speed in our reading. After three chapters earlier today, my 9yo said that The Penderwicks is becoming one of her top 5 favorite books/series.

Irene, there's one more bit near the end where Mrs. Tifton says something to Skye about Rosalind that is really out of line, and I edited that as I read it to the girls. It's when she's ranting about R. following Cagney around and what that might lead to. Just a heads-up.

Apart from this, we really loved the book. The girls felt such a connection to the characters! They found much in common with this delightful (if sometimes mouthy) family.

Thanks, Lissa. I read it earlier this evening and was able to catch it in time, even though I hadn't read your message yet. We read 5 chapters in all today, and I still had to close the book amid many protests at bedtime!

Don't you just love when this happens? I started The Children of Noisy Village for the littles yesterday and they really "belly-ached" about having to stop. I'm thinking I might just sit and read straight through today!
