Hello Ladies!
Maybe this has been addressed b4 but I couldn't find the thread. I need help with planning this year's grammar. We were using CHC's spelling and Language of God but it just wasn't working for us. I think its extremely important to know parts of speech, sentence structure, etc. That being said, I would like to do a more "living book" approach for this subject. I am going to try some 'out of the box' things for spelling (sequential spelling and 'spelling city') instead of workbook and spelling tests. However, I am stuck on grammar. My kids will be 5th gr and 3rd gr. Any books, websites, programs would be greatly appreciated.

A friend just recommended Michael Clay Thompson's Language Arts Curriculum. I don't know much about it and am exploring it myself, but it sound like it might be something like you describe.

I second Theresa's suggestion for Ruth Heller's books.
Also, Brian Cleary has a "Words are CATegorical" series which are really fun to teach parts of speech.
Also the Grammar Rock series from Schoolhouse Rock are lots of fun.
I'm in the minority, but I really enjoy diagramming, and this from Hedgeschool is really good (not a living book, I know).

Thought of some other fun grammar books by Lynne Truss. She has 3 picture books:

We are using the ideas behind Serendipity's Language Lessons but using Brian Cleary's books. The Ruth Heller books were a bit over my girls ages...but I may use them in a few years.

Here are a couple of things you could look at:
Winston Grammar- very good for visual learners (not living book really though, just a color card approach
Editor in Chief- for fun, a editing grammar approach
Write with the Best- I do love this. It is a writing program that also practices grammar too. I'm not sure if it teaches enough grammar or not?? But it's neat because it uses real pieces of literature to teach writing, grammar, punctuation, etc.

Just want to share that we are currently reading Grammar Land and loving it!!  
It is soo enjoyable, readable and memorable. The children are begging for grammar. At the end of each chapter told in an engaging, chatty manner are practical exercises that don't appear to be a grammar lesson (but really are  )

I was intrigued as well, Anita! It appears to be written for ages 10 - 15. Grammar Land by M. L. Nesbitt, originally written 1877, has been reprinted and is available for purchase from Yesterday's Classics, but you can get a really good look at it through the Baldwin Project. HTH!

I've just read another couple of chapters to my ds 10 and 12. These two rough and tumble boys howled when I stopped and tried to wrestle the book off me. Dd16 was listening in too. Dd8 does like it, it's just she was 'in a mood' today.

Today we learnt all about adjectives, and how nouns and adjectives have 'stolen' words off each other. Mr Adjective was arrested originally for stealing but they had to let him go
To explain, there is a judge presiding over Grammar Land with Sergeant Parsing and Dr Syntax to help. There have been complaints that thieving has been happening amongst the parts of speech and the nine parts of speech (news to me) have to each appear and argue their cases.
At the breakfast table dh was impressed when ds10 told him which words are articles, neither of us knew this. And did you know that you use an in front of silent h words? Like honour and heirloom?
It's all so engaging and informative and yet doesn't seem like work

I'm very slow at updating our technology around here,  , that's a great price. I just purchased this (and some other books) on Amazon for my dds to read together this fall. Thanks for the review and recommendation ladies.
We used the Heller books, Punctuation Celebration, and some of these Word Fun books during 1st grade with my younger dd. I'm pulling them out again for my son this fall (I'm already repeating something new I tried, sigh, feels good!)
