Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

And for those that doubt that we ever did land on the moon, Mythbusters: Moon Hoax is being reaired on July 20. My sister said it really did a great job of dispelling all those hoax theories.

I saw this several months ago. It really is quite interesting!!

We've been watching some footage and documentaries of Apollo 11 and the NASA Apollo program on History Channel today. Seems today is pretty much devoted to that. There are lots of videos on-line you can watch on their History Channel site.

Tonight is the premiere of the docudrama Moonshot on History Channel. Don't know if it will be appropriate for children or not.

We watched the Moon Shot docudrama this evening. I thought it was well done and we enjoyed it. It felt like the 1960's . It was rated TV PG - some rough language, scene with astronaut having to learn to urinate in a space apparatus (though they don't show anything), and some intense emotions related to Apollo 1 explosion and the possibility of death for any astronaut on mission. That's what I can remember.

There was a very interesting scene in which, after landing on the moon, but still in the lunar landing module, Buzz Aldrin takes communion and reads the passage, "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing." I was not aware of this and did some searching to find out more. Buzz was a devout Presbyterian. It was quite touching in the movie.

Thread from Catholic Answers forum asking about Buzz Aldrin communion.

I got choked up this afternoon when we were watching some NASA footage and they had the Genesis reading by Apollo 8 astronauts. I didn't know/remember there was a lawsuit filed by Madalyn Murray O'Hair because of this, though I may have heard something of that at the time.

And this reminded me of something I heard while listening to a recent Catholic Answers radio broadcast (I downloaded a bunch to listen to on our recent trip ).

Last year Colonel Ron Garan, a devout Catholic astronaut, took relics of St. Therese into space with him.

St. Therese Relic Makes Space Flight
St. Therese's Astronaut Visits Vatican
Astronaut to carry another Relic of St. Therese to space in 2011

It's a great story.

We have loads of Apollo shows to watch on our DVR, but we retired early last night. Thanks for the review of Moon Shot.

The Washington Post had this Article on Neil Armstrong. Perhaps you have noticed he isn't in many interviews or footage, nor did he answer many questions in the NASA interview they were replaying. This article explains why -- he's a wonderful man.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that in the Moonshot movie they showed Pope Paul VI watching the moon landing at his summer residence. Kind of a cool little Catholic addition to the movie.

And I found this article today about Pope Paul's comments on the lunar landing at the time.

Moon landing: Vatican Radio marks anniversary with Pope Paul VI texts

NASA restored the Apollo 11 footage on the moon:

Restored Footage of Neil Armstrong on Moon

Celebrity Culture vs. The Right Stuff. Great opinion piece on the state of popular culture and how Neil Armstrong is more "great".

I checked out more books today on this historic moonwalk and program, and the librarian commented that I am the only mom keeping up with current events. I guess it's because Mary G. left the county.

... and I forgot to tell them we were leaving    I'm thinking PWC Library is going to see a significant reduction in circulation rates compared to the past year!
