Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I found this series of books from World Book - Christmas Around the World - at the library today. I picked up:
Christmas in Mexico
Christmas in Brazil
Christmas in Italy
Christmas in the Philippines
Christmas in Russia
Christmas in Australia
Christmas in the American Southwest
Christmas in the Holy Land

It looks like the series also includes books on Denmark, Spain, Urkraine, Germany, Puerto Rico, Greece, Ireland, Colonial and Early America, Switzerland, Poland, Britain, Austria, France.

They generally seem like a good resource - contain a mix of secular and religious customs - those customs seem mostly Catholic in origin for the countries that are predominately Catholic. Each book has a couple craft activities, some recipes, and carols from that country. They would be a good place to start if you were looking for ethnic traditions for Christmas particularly for countries that aren't as commonly included. It seems like many books cover Latin American and Eastern European Christmas traditions. I've just had a chance to browse through them and it seems that there is some differences in the content. I would say the older books 80's and early 90's have more religious customs than the late 90's early 2000's published ones. Some like the Australia one and surprisingly the American Southwest one have very little religious tradition/explanation. And I don't believe that the craft for the Holy Land book - Pretzel Nativity Scene - is a traditional activity from that region (neither are the carols they list - really are European)

Mary M.

Greetings for SC! We used these books last year -- they had a treasure trove of ideas. You can find these used online (incl ebay) for fairly cheap if there's a particular country you're interested in. I didn't like the more current versions -- I liked the older ones that were lots of traditional cosutmes, etc.

Very cool series, I thought.

Mary G,

How old would you recommend the series to be?

Oh, I love this series! I've been recommending a few of the books here and there. Christmas in the Netherlands (I have the 1981 version) is an excellent one. I picked up my volumes very inexpensively on eBay.

They aren't living books. I think some of the articles could be read-aloud because they are filled with great photos. The crafts and recipes can be done as family projects.

I'm site-happy lately. Here are some sites for world Christmas studies:

Creches from Around the World

Christmas Worldview

Christmas Around the World

Christmas Celebrations Around the World

This might get you started, anyway. Have fun!
