Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What a GREAT read-aloud! It's written on about a 4th grade level, but it is fun for all of us. Nim's Island by Wendy Orr is the kind of book I loved as a kid ... adventure, fun animals, great location, just plain fun!

The movie, Nim's Island, starring Abigail Breslin and Jodie Foster is pretty close to the book ... and is a GREAT example of self-sacrifice and going outside yourself to help others ... but the book is even better.

Lots of great rabbit trails from this one are brewing in my head ... so many trails ... so little time!

Thanks, Mary!
We watched the movie and loved it. Afterwards I meant to see if there was a book and promptly forgot about it.

I placed it in my shopping cart.

We enjoyed both Nim's Island and Nim at Sea as read alouds. I thought they were great b/c they appealed to all ages and both genders.

We also really enjoyed both of these books, but the first one was our favorite.

This doesn't happen very often to me but I liked both the movie and the book. They both just make you feel good.   Homeschool Share has a unit study on Nim's Island to help with those rabbit trails.

I am so happy to hear about the movie. We really enjoyed it as a read aloud, but I was concerned that the movie wouldn't be appropriate for my 8 year old or that it just would do a disservice to the book.

Putting it on my Netflix!

We enjoyed both the movie and the book. Luke read the second book on his own so I don't know much about the sequel.

We loved the movie and have just started reading the book and going through the unit study. Wish we had known about the book first but we were totally out of the loop on that one. Usually, they plug the book along with the movie pretty heavily. I wonder how we missed it?
