Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Keywords: President Abraham Lincoln railroad train funeral assassination mourning

Interestingly the same general route that Lincoln took to Washington for his inaguration in 1861 was followed by the Lincoln funeral train but going the opposite direction back to Springfield. I was not really aware of the funeral train other than maybe hearing brief mention in past history studies. This book was really interesting as it made it very real. It's told from the perspective a young boy whose father takes him by carriage in the middle of the night to watch Pres. Lincoln's funeral train travel past their town. I love Wendell Minor ilustrations and was not disappointed. They evoke the emotion of this event very well.

The book includes an afterword with a brief overview of the history of this event and a map of the funeral train route. Also included is a one-page "Interesting Facts About the Lincoln Funeral Train" which includes lots of tidbits. Did you know that two future presidents as young men watched the funeral train go by? (Theodore Roosevelt in New York and Grover Cleveland in Buffalo) Or that there were 12 funerals held along the way? Or that the train traveled across the country at 20 miles an hour, slowing down even more as it past through towns?

Link to model of the train which is housed at the Lincoln Library in Springfield.

I have to say, that of all the new Lincoln books we read over the past months, THIS was my favorite! I get all choked up at the end! It's very very good.

And, loved the last couple pages with the facts, etc. I didn't know that his son's body was removed from its burial and transported with him on the same train.

We went out the other day and drove at 20 mph, cuz the girls wanted to see how fast the train went the whole way!

It's an amazing thing to think about and realize! That train went the WHOLE way THAT SLOW! All 1600 miles. We're so used to seeing trains speed by. And then to have that image of all those people coming out to see him!
