Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My dad made a comment last night on the phone to me that he heard somewhere that "after Jesus, Lincoln is the most-written-about-person-ever"!!!!    a nyone else hear that?

I picked up The Emanicpator's Wife the other day....it was just sitting there, I hadn't put it on hold (amazing, I know ). I started paging through it last night and couldn't put it down. I meant to look up reviews and things about the author but never got a chance.

Happy Bicentennial, everyone!

Yes, happy birthday, Abe!

Looks like a very fun day, Angi. Wish we had something like that here. We are having our group event Friday, with the activities and games mentioned in an earlier thread. I'll let you know how it goes.

I haven't read any "grown-up" books about her, but even the juvenile books we are reading have been facsinating. I've learned a lot about her.

I spent a bit of time going to the nearby banks trying to get some of the new pennies - unfortunatley no one had any yet. I found out it takes a bit of time for money to actually get to us after it's released from the federal reserve (which was today). Even the Mint's gift shop doesn't have them yet, even though there are millions of them being made a couple hundred yards away . We did get the newly issued postage stamps though

Here is an article I just found about the penny release - they launched them at Lincoln's birthplace NP. The only other places where the penny was introduced Thursday were in the chambers of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.

Here is a recap of our celebration.

The kids loved the Lincoln Log cake and even my boys helped with the Mock Penny Rug craft for a little bit.

- don't get me started on Lincoln...

This whole year since his 200th birthday anniversary has been full of celebration and events which are just now winding down. I think it's very appropriate to continue this anniversary celebration for the whole 12 months following the 2009 date. In fact one of our local library branches has a traveling Lincoln exhibit there now and we are going tomorrow as a an ending of the Year of Lincoln.

Happy 201st birthday today, Abe!!

I'm certain that Mary has a few Little Debbie Lincoln Logs squirreled away for the day!! Are you polishing pennies, Mary? Gazing at your stamps? I MUST KNOW what you are doing for Abe's birthday today!!

Oh, yes, gotta love Lincoln...

This year is big Lincoln year, too as it is the lead in the big sesquicentennial of the Civil War starting in April.

Wanted to add some great Lincoln resources from Homeschool Radio Shows.

These are all free MP3 files:

Out of the Wilderness - story of Thomas and Nancy Lincoln's courtship. Lincoln family history. (30 minutes)

The Story of Lincoln's Mother - true story of Nancy Hanks. (30 minutes)

The Man Who Taught Lincoln - story of Mentor Graham, schoolmaster, and a great influence on Lincoln. (30 minutes)

Thanks for this Jen. I am related to Lincoln through his mother Nancy (the picture of her is amazing to me because it looks very much like my Aunt Sue!) and it's often hard to find info. about her!

Oh, I love the radio shows and the presidential peg dolls! Great additions to the thread, ladies.

Way cool that you are related to Nancy Hanks, Michele.
