Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Will I survive him? He is so moody sometimes. I think he pouts and stomps around more now than he EVER did when he was in the toddler years He is certainly in LIMBO between being a CHILD to being a PRETEEN.

Any advice?

It got better for us after the big 13th birthday. It's definetly hard, it seemed like I couldn't say or do anything without sending him off in a huff. Don't put up with the slightest bit of disrespect, but allow the moods to ride out within reason.   It does get better.

physical work seems to help, things go much better around here when my son has been chopping wood or shoveling snow or swimming or such hard physical work.

I forgot to mention the importance of Dad at this time -- have dad leave him a list of jobs to do while he is at work, some challanging, hard, physical jobs. He will develop pride in his work (of the good kind!) and a great work ethic by showing Dad what he did. It is also very important for Dad to have him help when he is doing big jobs around the house.

Really Martha? So far I've found 10-12 to be the most difficult (with my oldest boy so far) He's almost 14 now and while he has his 'moods' - he's definetly leveled out. Maybe it is more the temperament of the individual?

How are ya feeling?

It may be like I found with 2's and 3's

For some kids 2 is really hard.. but then 3 isn't bad at all.. but if 2 goes well.. then 3 is hard.

so maybe if around 10 is hard, then around 13 isn't and if around 10 isn't then around 13 is.

I have one of those, too. I will say that work has been the answer. Work given by Dad or done alongside Dad is a miracle cure. He does well with work I give him, too, as long as it's meaningful and not just given to him to get him out of my hair .

St. John Bosco, pray for us and our boys!

Wow - I thought it was just me! Did not realize that it is a "phase". My husband's involvement is crucial. Lot of exercise and fresh air. And hugs from mom (even when mom does not feel like giving them!!)

My 9 1/2 year old is really pushing my buttons. I can only pray it gets better by 12-13. I worry so about him. I hope your right, Lisa. He just fights everything and is so contrary. He so angry all the time especially when he needs to do schoolwork.

Dad is so important right now. I pray every day that my husband will be the guidance my sons need.

I just wish they (the boys) could go outside right now but it is so cold. It was nice when they would spend the afternoon outdoors and get out that physical energy! The wrestling inside drives me crazy!

how I'm feeling is probably a big part of it. Very sore and exhausted. I've had terrible braxton hicks for well over a month now and, of ocurse, usually all night long.

I think a large part of it is temperment too. my oldest has always been my most independent and my biggest arguer and it appears that those qualities are not going to deminish much with age. They aren't "bad" qualities, but it's very hard for 13 yr old to manage them without crossing that disrespect line, kwim?

Honestly when he doesn't make us all want to thump him, we feel rather badly for him.

I really have to recommend again Boys Should be boys - one of the best things I have read on understanding boys - I am so glad that I have read it when my oldest guys are just 9.5.

Other books we have on raising boys:
Created for Work

Boyhood and Beyond

Raising Modern day Knights

I've really been enjoying following this thread...speaking as someone with a very moody and temperamental little guy!

I fixed one of your links, Marilyn. The one to Boyhood and Beyond was broken.

Thank you all for sharing here on this subject!
