Hello,
In A Year With God I saw an idea to make a little tomb out of rocks, and create your own Easter scene with moss and such.
I like that idea, and am wondering if any of you creative people would have an idea on how to make a permenant scene, and what would you do for people? I thought maybe of covering stiff cardboard with green felt, then making the tomb off to one side with a hot glue gun, and leaving room for stick crosses on the other side, on a little hill. I could always place moss on there and then brush off the dirt when it's ready for storage. For people, Fontanini makes the Risen Christ, Mary Magdalene, an angel, and for the crucifixion has Our Sorrowful Mother, John, and two Roman soldiers. These are costly so my thought was to buy two a year (starting w/ Risen Jesus and the announcing angel) and adding more each Easter. Fontanini also makes the "platforms" but they are really expensive and I think I can make that.
Any other ideas you have to improve, or additional ideas? Our boys like nativity sets, and I thought this might be a good thing to have, set up a crucifix and two stick crosses nearby, replay Good Friday, then Holy Saturday, then Easter! Thinking, now, could we do the Last Supper with Lego mini figures? Hmmmm.....

Dear Kelly and all,
My friend Tracey created a replica of Jerusalem along with the scenes of the Passion and Resurrection for display during the Lenten season. She keeps it on her dining room table, and it is AWESOME. She made the scene from a simple kit purchased through Dumb Ox, along with her own materials and ingenuity. The kit included a layout of Jerusalem with suggestions for building it, many photocopy-able figures to be colored and mounted, and a script for acting out the Passion. Tracey created buildings made from legos, shoeboxes, and other materials, while her husband spent hours cutting the figures they mounted on light wood. It was quite a labor intensive project, but stunning, and so edifying for the children! I was blown away when I saw it.
The "Patterns for Wooden Holy Week Figures" are available through Our Father's Housefor only $8. Please note that the only thing Tracey found disappointing was that when she ordered it, she thought it would be more of a "kit." Instead, it is strictly a pattern and contained none of the necessary materials (except the reproducable images). Still, if you are looking for ideas, inspiration, and guidance, this would be the perfect thing.

A few years ago I bought a Easter set from Catholic Child catalog. I see that it has gone up in price and is still expensive at $120.00 for the set, but it is very nice and cheaper than the Fontanini ones. Though I love the Fontanini and I'm collecting the Christmas ones one precious figure at a time.

We set one up every Holy Week with simply neutral color blocks that we place a large rock in front of the opening. We use playmobil people as guards with sticks and swords in their hands. We use the angel from the Christmas playmobile. We wrap a statue of Jesus in a hankerchief and place Him inside on Good Friday. On EAster morning, before the children get up, I take Jesus out, we place him prominently somewhere else in the house, and place an angel on the rock of the open tomb. Very simple but the kids really love it.
We don't do the crosses, but I think last year we taped three crosses made from the palm sunday palms to the wall behind the scene.

I received an email from Illuminated Ink this week. They have a new product Cut and Color Passion Playthat looked interesting. At $15 it is certainly affordable and it looks like it would be a nice keepsake.

Mary Ellen, that looks great! I think that I am going to order it. I love Illuminated Ink's products! We have the Our Lady of Guadalupe cut and color, also the Our Lady's Grotto and have done their bookmarks too. The only thing that we had trouble with was the Angel Fliers. We did those for the Feast of the Archangels. They were beautiful to color, but SO complicated to figure out the folds to make them fly!!

I saw a neat, homemade Nativity idea in December's _Family Fun_ magazine that could be translated into an Easter scene. Check it out at

Figures are kid-friendly and made from pipe cleaners and yarn. They have a folk-art look to them sure to become a treasure.
