Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Wow! I just realized these are both approaching rapidly. What do people do to celebrate and remember these days?

We are always looking for ideas in our house!

Some great ideas are already on the Halloween thread.

I like to focus on the Poor Souls. We go to Mass, especially during the octave and then visit the local graveyard to pray there. We have no family graves nearby, but when we visit in PA, I like to visit the family sites (my dh's father, grandparents, etc.). During November we add the "Eternal Rest" prayer in between decades of the rosary, and after our Blessing Before Meals we always say year 'round "and may the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen."

Praying for the Dead and Gaining Indulgences in November is just a short summary of all the special things we can do during this time to help the Poor Souls.

This is a special blessing in the new Roman Ritual or Book of Blessings for visiting the cemetery.

Catholic Culture has some wonderful compilations and ideas.

Women for Faith and Family for All Souls Day and All Saints DAy and Halloween.

Remembering the Dead -- Don't Make them Remind Us

Every November, I get special little "reminders" to offer little things up for the Poor Souls...it's almost as if they are nudging me to "not forget them!"

We visit a cemetery in November (celebrate the three Masses on All Souls Day) and make a rubbing of a tombstone and bring it home and pray for the soul. If we lived in the same town as relatives burial places we would visit these, take flowers, pray the rosary (probably only 1 decade with our crew).

For All Saints we pick a saint (each child), make costumes, write up a guess who I am type thing, have a procession of "saints" to a hymn like Through All the Saints who, or any other such. We pray a litany of the Saints - usually using the saints represented in costume and baptismal and confirmations saints and other special family saints. We make a poster of the Communion of Saints and use holy cards and photographs - At the top we have the Church Triumphant with a holy card of the Trinity and angels and saints, then for the Church Suffering we have pictures and/or names of deceased family members, priests from our diocese (particularly if they are known to our children - ie the priest that gave me First Holy Communion, the Priest that baptized the children, etc.) and the Church Militant - here we have pictures of our living family members, pictures of our pope, bishop and pastor and some pictures from our church directory. If there are others alive that the children would recognize we would include them (ie Mother Theresa before she died- now we have to move that picture)

Throughout the month of November we try to at least pray extra for the souls in purgatory. We probably should add sacrifice to this.
