Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I would just like to know who bought the copy of The Kitchen Madonna I put in my Amazon cart. I recieved an email from the seller today telling me I was getting a refund because the book was out of stock.

My copy of Five for Sorrow, Ten for Joy came in the mail today. I have to stop reading these threads though, the Amazon boxes are starting to pile up in the recycling bin.

OK - if you've never read anything by Rumer Godden and these are the options you have at your local library, which would you read first?

A candle for St. Jude

The river

An episode of sparrows

The greengage summer

The first one. I tried that by chance and loved it. The story is around ballet teaching, something from her own life.

An Episode of Sparrows is, if I remember correctly, a children's book and it is a quick read. I loved it!

Oh, no, Natalia...it is most definitely not for children....but it IS wonderful!!!

That is the one I would pick...because it is the only one I have read on that list.

It was actually the first Rumer Godden book I read.

You all have me in the mood for another one......I have a bunch I still have not yet read.....but first.......two other books to get through!

I just read The Kitchen Madonna the other day and really enjoyed it! It was my first introduction to Rumer Godden. What a lovely find and I'm happy to hop on here to find this discussion too!

As a former dancer I started A Candle for St. Jude with high hopes... why am I not getting into it??    I've only read about 30 pages or so, but it's just not grabbing me like The Kitchen Madonna did with its sweetness!

Maybe I'll have to try Miss Happiness and Miss Flower or An Episode of Sparrows next- they were both waiting for me on the hold shelf at the library today!

Sorry, Jenny! I hate when I recommend a book and people don't enjoy it.

I didn't read A Candle for St. Jude until after reading a few of her books. So I guess I knew to expect layers upon layers in her novels and not just a story.

Oh, goodness! I've recommended many a book that others didn't care for! Don't worry... it was sitting on my night stand and I picked it up before I even found this thread recommending her books I certainly haven't given up on Rumer Godden though!

I'm bumping because right around age 8 or 9 my girls start reading Rumer Godden. My oldest just adored her books. I wanted to add a few my oldest enjoyed and her sister will be reading soon too:

The Diddakoi
The Fairy Doll
Already mentioned but favorites too:
Holly & Ivy
Miss Happiness and Miss Flower

I'm so glad I found this thread so many more to add to our list

I read The River years ago. It was good but very sad.

The Kitchen Madonna is fabulous. My hate to read dd even liked it.

I also recommend In This House of Brede and Five for Sorrow Ten for Joy.

Another brilliant grownup read: The Battle of the Villa Fiorta. It's a pretty devastating story about two children whose mother has left their father for another man, and they go to Italy to get her back. While it's not a happy, sweet story like The Kitchen Madonna (which I adore), it has many of the themes which run through both her children's and adult books: misfit children, brokenness, necessary sacrifice. She was a writer who told the truth -- in this book, the adulterous lovers are lying to themselves about being able to escape the past and make a new and perfect life, and the woman's children bring the truth of what they have done right to their doorstep.

As a child, I devoured her books. The Fairy Doll was probably my favorite, followed by Miss Happiness and Miss Flower.

Sally

Sally, thanks for that recommendation. I just searched for it on Goodreads, to add to my huge "to-read" list and it's actually The Battle of the Villa Fiorita if anyone else is looking for it.

A couple years ago I read A Time to Dance, No Time to Weep, which is the first half of her autobiography. Does anyone know which book is the second half? I'd like to finish that story. You really get a good sense of why she writes as she does, after reading about her life.

A House with Four Rooms

Fabulous book, includes her conversion story, and if I remember correctly, this is the volume that includes her educating her Charlotte Mason style.

I loved China Court. If you love books and tradition, this book will really appeal to you.

Is it too corny to say I haven't met a Rumer Godden I didn't like?

My boys love St. Jerome and the Lion!

Did I mention here that The Kitchen Madonna is in print again by Bethlehem Books?
