Hi ladies,
I am planning to have a year of living math for my 6th grade dd next year. (We will use no math textbook!) I was thinking that I would plan it all out this summer, so I searched archives here and visited recommended websites, etc.
Now I am sitting down to plan it out and wondering if I really need to invent this wheel. Has anyone ever planned/mapped a year of reading and talking about math, including experiments and real life explorations? Or do you know of one that has been done?
I guess I'm just tired at this time of the year and wishing it was all thought out already.

The website Living Math has a curriculum of living math based on history. It is written at several levels. You may want to check it out.

Yes, Suzanne, thanks! It is an awesome resource and one we will be making plenty of use of next year as well.
I also have and love the book How Math Works and have often thought it would make an excellent spine for a living math year for about that age. It has clear explanations, great demonstrations and experiments or activities for each topic. Just add in some living math books to go along with each topic and you've got a great curriculum.

We are going to be using these living math history plans for this next year. I am so excited about this. The book list is amazing and my library system has most of them which is an added bonus. I did have to buy one of the major books just because it is used throughout the year so a library copy would be difficult.
You can see a sample page at the website to see if this is what you are looking for.

I'm sorry ladies,
I don't see the curriculum list on the Living Math website. Can you tell me where to click to find it?
Thanks

On the left side bar, click on living math plans. A drop down window pops up. At the bottom of the window is sample plans. That will give you an idea if this is what you want. There is also a booklist somewhere in that window. I went through the list to see if my library had most of the titles. They do. That was the deciding factor for me. I only had to buy Joy of Math and the other Pappas' book that is listed there.
I just got my plans downloaded for the 1st quarter (there are 4 quarters altogether.) They look awesome! I have already printed them out and am slowly reading through them, getting ideas for other activities.
Blessings,

You can also look at "Readers by Concept" and then "Cultural Math and History". That pulls up a great list of books.

Thank you for sharing these. We are about six months ahead of where we need to be...so this will be a great way to just go gently! and not loose all our steam completely. We already are keeping a Math Journal, but these are fun activities. Thanks for sharing. The Word Document makes it so easy to use.
