Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

A Packet of Seeds by Deborah Hopkinson and Bethanne Andersen

A pioneer family moves west. The mother is so lonely and homesick until her two children dig a flower garden for her, just like back home. When mama sees the garden she remembers the packets of seeds her sisters gave her as a going away present. A beautiful and heart-wrenching story of pioneer life!!! It made me tear up just thinking about how brave these women were and how their lives were so hard in so many ways.

The gouache and oil paintings are simply magnificent…..my dd-5 and I must’ve sat for 15 minutes just looking at the beautiful pages talking about each one.

Gardens flowers westward expansion America Oregon trail prairie babies frontier pioneer life lonely loneliness homesickness mother motherhood home sisters daughter family sorrow roses land seeds work farmhouse spring

Oh, Suzanne, one of my very favorites! My daughter really likes it as well (boys not so much) - must be a "chick" picture book. Like you said it really looks at pioneer life and the deep reality of what that life was like. I tear up everytime.

Ahhhhh, yes....the "boy factor" that I can't weigh in on very well, now, can I?

So, here is my standard disclaimer....(as if anyone is going to read this except you, Mary ).

All of my picture book recommendations are read only by girls! I will note if my husband enjoyed it. Otherwise, assume ONLY GIRLS!

Duly noted!

I think boys think this book is fine/okay. It just touches girls in a different way. It's about friendships and relationships. Some people think it's too heavy for little ones - as clearly this pioneer mom is facing some post partum depression which is really sad, she can't even enjoy the baby. But is ends so well and the sadness is lifted. And the generous giving of the daughter and husband is so beautiful.
