My sister's father-in-law, whom I've known since I was around 14, is in critical condition. He was recently diagnosed with cancer on his lungs but they are sure they removed it all. He was recovering well and out of the ICU. Now he can't breathe and they are not sure why. Last night they almost "pulled the plug" but when the second doctor came in to sign the papers, he said he thinks he knows what's wrong. So now they are waiting to see what can be done. This is so hard on the family. They are a very close family and this man is one of the kindest people I've ever met. Please, if you can, take a moment to pray for him and his family. I know they would appreciate it.

The doctor thinks the problem is that he has a blood infection and so they put him on antibiotics. The situation is still very critical. Your continued prayers are appreciated.

Update 5/21/08:
Everything is about the same this morning. The doctors reported yesterday that his blood counts are all good and all organs except the lungs are working properly. He is still in ICU, of course, and on the respirator, sedated and stable. Thank you so much for all the prayers.

Update on my sister's father-in-law (Mr. Pagano)5/23/08:
On Wednesday they had stopped Mr. Pagano's sedative but he has not awakened yet. They think he had a mini-stroke...nothing major. Not sure why he is not waking up or moving much, but it could just be the sedative is still wearing off. He has been responding to requests to move his legs and feet but that's about it. The doctors want to take the tube out of his throat and do a tracheotomy so he can breathe through that and when he awakens he will be able to talk and eat though his mouth. The doctors feel the tube has been in long enough. They don't want it damaging his voice box. There is a slight problem with one of his "counts" but not sure exactly what, but the doctors also have said it's nothing major to be concerned about. I'm sure they are keeping an eye on it. They are doing the tracheotomy tomorrow. It will be better for him and make him more comfortable when he does wake up. Thanks so much for the continued prayers!
