I am following this discussion with a lot of interest.

I think I will always remember Sr. Agnes of the Philosophy Department bemoaning the college students who took her philosophy course during freshman year(her course was part of a core of humanity courses all students had to take) - she really felt that there was something that just did not click in their brains until they were a bit older. She wasn't talking about maturity or experience or the books one had read but felt that there was an actual brain development stage that the younger college students hadn't reached. If she had her way no one would take her Introduction to Philosophy before the spring semester of their freshman year.

She was very fond of phrase "Pearls before swine."   

In my latest Ignatius Press catalog - I did see the Ignatius Critical Editions which look interesting. Any thoughts? EDIT - just found a better link.

I took a two class course my senior year in high school on the humanities. It covered everything from ancient to modern times in literature, history/philosophy, music, and art.

For the literature portion we covered a large quantity of good and great books. I really enjoyed the course, and I think if you asked most of my classmates they would have listed it as one of their favorite courses. If I hadn't been exposed to the wide array of literature then, I wouldn't have read those books at all since I didn't revisit them in my college classes.

That being said, we went quite quickly through the books. I like the idea of picking a handful of good/great books to study in depth from a Catholic perspective in high school. It's good to be familiar with the stories and the themes if they are covered again in college, and if they are not at least our children will have been exposed to some great pieces of literature.
