Well I asked because our parish does follow the Novus Ordo but I know the Bishop included the slap in Confirmation at least for my oldest when she was confirmed about 5 yrs ago.

And when I checked with my kids.. the one 2 yrs ago did not and the two who just recieved Confirmation this spring the Bishop did a light touch (the girls wouldn't even call it a light slap )

Ummm that's 3 different Bishops.. the one 2 yrs ago was with a temporary replacement until we got our new Bishop.

Regards your Preparation for Confirmation siggestion I note it is based on the Baltimore Catechism. As I already have the BC would that cover the same material?

Very intriged by any The Solider of Christ as it is written by Mother Mary Loyola. Would 12 and 9 year olds understand it?

Oh and I bough a new book on a recommendation elsewhere, A Confirmation Reader Retreat by Janet McKenzie.

If it is of help to anyone I recently wrote all of our To Know, Understand goals for Confirmation. Really helped my mind have clarity and direction.

Our Bishop, like Jodie's does a light touch. I do believe it is meant to symbolise the same thing though.

Erin - we really enjoyed Called to Knighthood: the Sacrament of Confirmation in the Kingdom Family of God

Also the Tim Staples cd Teen Apologetics.

My twins were confirmed earlier this year - the preparation and the day were very meaningful for them.

Our Bishop does a light touch, too. It isn't a hard slap - it is more to signify than anything else. I really like the symbolism and it is a key part of preparation here. In our area the Bishop does not offer the strike on the cheek anywhere but our parish, so I'm finding it interesting that both you and Jodie are familiar with it. I think that's great! It's a wonderful and very meaningful part of Confirmation I think!

Yes, it is based on the Baltimore Catechism. It does offer a little bit more explanation in a few areas, and pulls out the Baltimore Catechism questions that are specific to Confirmation. It also details the Rite of Confirmation and I like the preparatory prayers. It's a very small booklet.

I don't know - I've never used it with a 9yo. A 12 yo would understand it. Mother Loyola's writing is meaty though - even for a 12yo, so a very slow reading and discussion would be in order. It would be best as a read aloud.

Mother Loyola sets the tone of the book making use of a military model and the idea of chivalry and knighthood - the first chapter is entitled "knighthood." It definitely appeals to boys, but is still entirely appropriate for girls, too! There is no white-washing or delicate details in this book - it is intended to portray as virtuous and noble those that came before us and left this world as martyrs for the faith. Their courage is underscored. The book's intention is to strengthen and equip with spiritual weaponry. So...you will not find it flowery or sentimental.

I think in terms of appropriateness for a 9yo -- that would be a judgment call based on the child's sensitivity levels. If I were preparing a 9yo for Confirmation I would definitely want this included at some point - whether read aloud slowly and discussed...or saved for a couple of years. It is an excellent book!
