Our homeschooling group, Sacred Heart Home Educators, just received permission from Bishop Olmsted Bishop of Phoenix Diocese to prepare our children, ages 8+ to receive the sacrament of Confirmation in January 2006. We will work with a designated priest. This priest and representatives of our group are asking for feedback on materials to prepare our children. This is all very exciting and a bit overwhelming! Until this, each family has needed to work through their own parish and wait until the candidate was 17. This list of preparation materials will not be thrust upon parents but will be offered as suggestions and direction. This list will need to be sent to the Bishop for approval.
Any words of wisdom, especially in meeting the needs of a wide age group, will be appreciated.
Love,

That is very exciting Angie. I'd love to hear what materials you end up using. I'm going to present my 9yo ds for Confirmation this year; I am very happy as I've been praying about 14 yo's Confirmation and the answer I received was to have them both confirmed together! I'll be waiting to see what doors open and which are closed

I've been unable to spend much computer time lately, but was wondering if that list got posted Elizabeth? I'm doing some studying for confirmation prep for my kids....
God bless,
Angela

I'm using Remain in Me available from Catholic Heritage Curriculum as a spine to build a notebook like the First communion notebooks.I'm very, very pleased with Remain in Me. I'm still sort of working my way through it and making it up as I go, but there's much promise here and it's quite thorough.
Christian is also reading through the Vision books series this year.
He attends an apologetics class for homeschoolers at a local parish. They are using the Jim Burnham series.
Anybody turned up anything new since we last chatted about this?

Elizabeth, I like what I see at the webpage for Remain in Me. How is the literature selection? Is it for all ages?
Our preparation continues in surprising ways. The parents in our home education group met with Fr. Tim Davern and he gave us a lovely presentation on the history of Confirmation and tied it into the changes here in Phoenix. Here is an interesting article he shared with us, GIFT FROM ON HIGH. Dh and I are feeling very respected and confident that we are doing right be our children. We spend time each Sunday in formal discussion while continuing our informal faith formation. Talk about the science of relations...listening to the connections that the children are making is amazing...the work of the Holy Spirit!
Devin is enjoying the book Following the Holy Spirit. It is written as a dialogue between a follower and the Holy Spirit. We are also reading Eucharistic Love which has a completely different flavor.
More later...
Love,

Angie,
There's nothing new on the literature page. They recommend Landscape withe Dragons, Narnia, Lord of the Rings. The suggest saints' biographies (none by title, just a general recommendation); The Book of Virtues and literary fiction (again, just a general recomendationand no titles).
While I don't consider the literary component a strong point(I didn't even know it existed until you asked--it's just one page), I think the book overall is very solid and very useful.

Elizabeth, at some point do you think you might be able to post how you are building a notebook off this book, similar to the First Communion pages that you have on your web site? I'm a convert of less than 5 yrs...not really sure what a child should *know* in order to be confirmed, and my new diocese confirms younger than my old one did (8th grade versus 11th grade), so its on my mind a lot these days.
I really want to do a notebook format for some of our preparation, as well as mixing in some other stuff...audiotapes addressed to teens, apologetics, saint stories, etc...I'm also debating whether or not I should make this a 2 yr process or a 1 year process.
I'd appreciate any other help you can post.
Thanks so much for this thread, Angie. I'm so grateful!
