Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Comets, Stars, the Moon, and Mars

Space Poems and Paintings by Douglas Florian

We are enjoying this book during our latest Astronomy Unit. Short, pithy poems on double pages are illustrated most creatively through the use of stamped type, cutouts in the page that preview the next topic, pasted paper collages, and broad brushstrokes of thick paint. This is a new book, it even addresses the Pluto problem -

Pluto
Pluto was a planet.
But now it doesn't pass.
Pluto was a planet.
They say it's lacking mass.
Pluto was a planet.
Pluto was admired.
Pluto was a planet.
Till one day it got fired.

Which simply cracks me up. We "fired" a planet!
Harcourt has a page for the book where you can see inside it.
A second poem from the book -

The Great Beyond
If you flew past Pluto
There's more that you'd see:
A planetoid, Sedna,
Found in 2003,
And objects in orbit
Known as planetesimals
(Sometimes so small,
They're measured in decimals.)
Great galaxies spin,
While bright comets race.
And I'd tell you more,
But I've run out of space.

I finally was on the right computer to look up this title on the library catalog and they don't have it! Durn. Guess I'll have to put it in my amazon basket. I love Douglas Florian!
