At least for the pregnant lady, and her poor unsuspecting children

Actually two different recipes, I am on a obsessive kick right now with smoothies

I highly recommend the book "Super Smoothies". It's available on Amazon, and I've also seen it at Jamba Juice stores. I have loved just about every recipe I've tried out of it, and even my picky-eating kids love it.

I don't like canned coconut water -- the flavor is almost always off or chemical-tasting :(

But I *love* avocado shakes/smoothies. That was my fave shake in college.

Coupla things...

I made smoothies yesterday with frozen strawberries, vanilla yogurt, pomagranite juice, and fresh spinach - Very Good! The children watched me make it and said that if they didn't see it, they'd never believe I put spinach in it!

Elizabeth - Thanks for sharing the orange ice recipe - my kids have really bad sore throats and they have been soothed by these!

I'd like the avacado smoothie recipe too!

I have never actually made smoothies.
What great ideas. I'm wondering how long freshly made smoothies last? In that Vitamix video she made quite a large batch. What if it doesn't get used right away? How long will it last in the fridge? A day, maybe?

We do one chopped frozen banana, maybe 1c fresh or frozen mango/papaya/pineapple, one peeled orange, 1/2c yoghurt, 2 c water, ice if most of the fruit is fresh, 2 handfuls spinach and blend. The kidlets couldn't cope with linseeds so we stopped that, but I liked it.

Does anyone have the smoothie recipe from the Nourishing Traditions cookbook? I lost my cookbook somewhere ( I think I lent it to someone, I have got to stop doing that) and my kids are craving that smoothie recipe! Thanks!

Blessings,
Betsie

oh my goodness, sorry, chicken lady, i'm a YEAR late!!! i never saw your question.

it's just avocado-milk-sugar-ice. some lemon juice if you like. soooooo good. i esp. like it when the sugar isn't thoroughly dissolved. not particularly good for you, but yum! these days i tend towards less sugar though.

Bumping this because I'm having lots of fun playing with my vitamix and found a pdf on their website with ideas for green smoothies. You just take 1 item from the first column, 2 from the second and 1 from the 3rd. My favorite green smoothie so far is green grapes, kiwi, pineapple, frozen banana and spinach. I want to buy some kale to try out soon!

Green smoothie cheat sheet

Also found an avocado chocolate smoothie recipe that looks yummy on one of their videos :
1/2 to one avocado (depending on size)
2 heaping teaspoons of good cocoa powder (sometimes I add more)
agave nectar to taste ( I use about a heaping tablespoon or add a packet of stevia)
3-4 dates or 1/2 ripe banana
dash of cinnamon to taste
juice of 1/2 lemon
1/2 cup milk of choice (almond, soy etc) Optional
2 cups ice-

It is all up to your taste- It will be more like a frostee without the added liquid which I like- but if you want to drink it with a straw, use the milk too- good both ways! you can add a few chocolate chunks or espresso beans etc....

Thanks, Melissa! I don't have my Vitamix yet, but this looks really promising I'll go ahead and try it in my blender.

Has anyone tried putting yellow squash or zucchini in a green smoothie? I've just started making them and so far I've used spinach or kale, plus pineapple, mango, cantaloupe, strawberries, and blueberries (not all together)

But my garden spinach bolted and it's too hot to grow more at the moment, and buying spinach and kale every few days will get expensive over time. OTOH, my garden is bursting with zucchini and yellow squash at the moment! I'm a bit leery of trying it on my own, and wasting a bunch of fruit.

My usual smoothie we like is:
1 banana
1 or 2 cups of yogurt or kefir
usually add another fruit eg. strawberries, mango or blueberries...
1 or 2 egg yolks or some flaxseed oil
few tbs coconut oil
if the fruit are not sweet enough I might add a tsp of honey

I based this on the recipe from here

This may be a stupid question but....does it matter if the fruit is frozen or fresh?

I think it just depends on your preference. I have done it both ways. With fresh, it's more like a thick juice, with frozen, it's more like a milkshake. Some people just add ice when they use fresh fruit to get that frosty consistency, but I do NOT like the wateriness as the ice melts, so I much prefer to use frozen fruit.
