Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This is an out of print FIAR volume 4 book. I happened to find it in a third grade reading textbook. This was a real find because the book is selling online for $70 plus.

This was absolutely a fabulous story about resourcefulness during a crisis. During one of the wars of the last century in Budapest, Hungary, a terrible winter came. The people and the hippos were starving. But a very bright father, figured out how to feed the hippos without depriving people of food. He fed them the straw bath mats, straw door mats, and any thing else that was straw. Everyday a cart went through the city to collect straw items to feed the hippos. They stayed alive through the winter. I think this was such a gem in this day of exaggerated environmental values. And to some degree it is a true story.

I remember this book, too. It reminds me of another good book about animals surviving in war-torn areas.
Gleam & Glow by Eve Bunting. It is also set in this same general area of Eastern Europe but during the Bosnia War.
