We are in the market for a new digital camera. Our Canon died (it was a gift) and I wanted to see if there are any Camera recommendations out there?

I came to this forum about a year and a half ago for the same info. It is in the history somewhere. I need to take 5 minutes and learn to link :)
I ended up getting a Nikon D80 and LOVE it. I was a film girl with a totally manual 35 mm. I loved the flexibility and ease. The more bells and whistles the harder it is for me. This camera can be totally automatic(so you can hand it to someone else to take photos)or totally manual. Yeah, there is a bunch of other stuff but I mostly ignore it. And it takes awesome photos--or is it me that takes those awesome photos? Maybe it is my REALLY cute kids :)

PS- the D40 came out about 6 months after I spent all the money on the D80. Nice job by Nikon. I am sure they made some extra $$ by doing it that way. I would consider that if I hadn't already bought and fell in love with my D80.

I have the Nikon D40X (10 mega pixels). I love it...worth every penny.

I just ordered a Nikon P50 after having only used Sony DSCs for years. We'll see how it goes, I'll come back and post.

I second the Canon Rebel, but it's a digital SLR and is a bit over the top for casual use (a bit over the top for me, too, but I love it!)... Have a good friend who recommends the Nikons as well.

I too just recieved the Rebel XTi for a Christmas, Anniversary, birthday combo present (that's supposed to cover dh for the next 5 years  ) Costco and Sam's carry both cameras (Nikon and Cannon) in store and on line for a reasonable price. Aaand you could always check out both at a camera store where you could ask the questions on which would better suit you. We also have a small (unbelievable how small they are these days) point and shoot that's a Kodak. Not sure which model, as dh has it at present moment, but it shoots great shots as well and is very user friendly.

Me too, best Christmas present ever!
Just gotta figure out how to downsize the photos for blogging, Sailblogs won't accept a 10 megapixel photo of an anhinga's eye for some reason...

We got an Olympus Stylus 400 a number of years ago (don't believe it's made anymore) but I liked it for a lot of the same reasons as Anne listed. It can be a point and shoot.. and you can do a lot of adjustments yourself. And it's "weather resistent" and after seeing so many people worrying over spray from sprinklers or the ocean or a threatening rain storm.. I find it nice to not have to worry so much.
I'm thinking I have had it for 6 yrs now.. and it's still doing well.. oh the cover/shut off is a bit "sticky" in that it takes a moment for it to "remember" to turn off or a couple tries to get it to do so.. but that's the only problem I've had. I started with 2 batteries so I could have one charging and one in use.. and in the 3-4 yr time frame I needed to replace those.
I'm hoping in the next year or so to replace this one.. I would love a faster shutter speed.. my kids are getting into sports and while I can get some good pictures.. I can tell the shutter speed is very limiting when the kids move faster.

You can downsize the on the camera, or you can upload them to an online album like Picasa and it will automatically downsize them for blogging purposes. The Nikon and Picasa work so well together.
