Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We watched The Sound of Music today and ds is interested in learning more about these wars. Is there a list somewhere of good books/literature for a 10 year old? He is somewhat sensitive so things really scary would have to be out.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Marilyn posted a Unit Study that they did for WWII. It is really thorough and does include a great listing of books.

Here is a discussion and listing of picture books on WWII. There are lots of great ones out there. I am a big fan of using picture books for history study for all ages. Since you say he is sensitive the picture book route is good - most are pretty tame but the amount of historical info they contain is incredible.

Another thread included living literature for WWI.

Thank you, Mary. Off to put some things on hold from the library.

I found this book at our library when getting some books set in France.   It looks really good:

The House of the Four Winds, by Colette Vivier.

Vivier (1898-1979) began writing young-adult-novels in the 30's, and then was part of the French resistance in Paris during the Occupation, which is what this story is about.

"...tragic yet exciting story of a neighborhood group of Parisian boys during the occupation."

It's translated from French, so when I skimmed it....at first glance it seemed "choppy," but still looks really good and for the upper elementary, middle-grade levels.
