Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Sing a Song of Popcorn
and
Read-Aloud Rhymes for the Very Young

are our illustrated favorites.

Here are some others that we've really liked and check them out all the time at the library.

Oh, a good illustrated version of Robert Louis Stevenson's A Child's Garden of Verses, hands down!

Cicely Mary Barker's The Complete Book of the Flower Fairies is a close second around here.

And if you're fans of Pooh, you'll enjoy A.A. Milne's Now We Are Six.

I second A Child's Garden of Verse. We also LOVE a book called The Llama Who had No Pajama:100 Favorite Poemsby Mary Ann Hoberman. Another favorite is Caroline Kennedy's collection titled A Family of Poems.

The Harp Laurel Wreath because I can use it for all the children.Poems for Memorizationby Rod and Staff because it is divided by grades 1 to 9 (not that I follow that too much) and I love the poem selections in that book.
Blessings,

Monica, I did a post in 2006 about our favorite children's poetry books: A Few Books and a Little Dickens. My favorites of those listed are the ones illustrated by Gyo Fujikawa and Eloise Wilkins.

Eloise Wilkins' and A Child's Garden of Verses are winners here as well. We also like Jane Dyer's Animal Crackers, which Dawn mentions in her blog post.

A few that haven't been mentioned:

Kate Greenaway's Under the Window--a sweet set of poems she published before her famous Mother Goose.

Kate Cox Goddard's Chatterbox Child--a dear little collection of poems with line drawings.

Both of these, I think, are out of print, but you might see if your library has them.

I'm back with another suggestion: I just picked up Margaret Wise Brown's Nibble Nibble and have been reading it through this afternoon. I have encountered Brown's poetry through various anthologies, but this set of her poems about little creatures is very sweet. (The book I linked is an older volume, which has all 25 poems. There is a newer version that only has 5.)

We've had this from the library a couple of times and I would consider buying it (for financial reasons, we rarely actually buy books.)

Charles Causley: Early in the Morning. That's our hands-down favorite.

He was a marvelous Cornish poet who died several years ago -- his "adult" poems are very beautiful and childlike, too. Early in the Morning is a read-aloud delight!

A Child's Treasury of Poems, edited by Mark Daniel is absolutely lovely. In addition to being a nice collection of poetry, it includes reproductions of quite a few very beautiful paintings.

Peace,
Nancy

My kids LOVED the book MUD, MOON, AND ME by Zaro Weil. The poem "Mud" was their absolute favorite. When Reilly was two, she would recite this every time she sat in the mud. I highly recommend this book.

(Here's just the first stanza:

"It squelches and belches
A spattering flop
A morass of dense goop
That gurges and glops
Now seeping, now weeping
A popple, a spurt
A lagoon of brown pudding
Some very wet dirt...)

Also, all of my kids have loved THE SPIDER AND THE FLY -- even the two-year old enjoys this one!
