Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Please indulge me - it seems that I have picked another western artist for the artist of the month. November is Georgia O'Keeffe's birth month so I had been thinking about her and then we had an opportunity to visit Santa Fe, New Mexico two weeks ago. The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum is located there and so I took the kids for a visit on their free night. Since we were going to be studying her anyway and just had that recent experience I decided to include her here. Her paintings are very distinctive and dynamic. I think children easily recognize her works. There are a lot of picture books on O'Keeffe as well. So to start, here is a biography of Georgia O'Keeffe and a sampling of her art - some flowers for which is especially know, some bleached bone paintings which are very distinctive to her work, and a landscape typical of the area where she worked most in New Mexico.

And next month we will go back to some non-western artists - promise!

Morning Glory with Black

"Nobody sees a flower, really – it is so small – we haven't time, and to see takes time, like to have a friend takes time. So I said to myself: I'll paint what I see - what the flower is to me - but I'll paint it big...I'll make even busy New Yorkers take time to see what I see of flowers."

Oriental Poppies

"Everyone has many associations with a flower. You put out your hand to touch it, or lean forward to smell it, or maybe touch it with your lips almost without thinking, or give it to someone to please them. But one rarely takes the time to really see a flower. I have painted what each flower is to me and I have painted it big enough so that others would see what I see."

Cow's Skull with Calico Roses

O’Keeffe found inspiration in the smaller details of the terrain as well. Bones, rocks, and pieces of wood became subjects for her artwork. Bones, especially, intrigued her: she saw them as beautiful flowers of the desert and symbols of life. This idea so captivated her that she shipped large barrels of bones to her home in New York so she could continue to paint them even when she wasn’t in New Mexico.

I'm glad you like her Stef.

I also wanted to point out that I specifically chose one of her poppy paintings for the study because of the association of the poppy with Veteran's Day and remembrance of fallen soldiers. So it ties in with the US and English holiday this weekend.

Thanks for sharing Mary. The High Museum of Art in Atlanta will be hosting an exhibition on Georgia O'Keeffe and the Women of the Stieglitz Circle in February so it will tie in perfectly :-)!
