Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Today, August 21st, is the anniversary of the apparition of Our Lady of Knock to a group of poor Irish people in County Mayo, Ireland in 1879. Our homeschool is dedicated to Our Lady under her title "Our Lady of Knock," for a variety of reasons, not the least of which that I was inspired to home educate while praying at her shrine. For those of you who would like to learn more about this lesser known apparition, I highly recommend the book I Saw Our Lady by Tom Neary and the official website of Knock Shrine in Ireland.

One of my favorite Irish hymns tells the story of Our Lady of Knock. The melody is haunting, but the lyrics themselves are inspiring enough to stand alone:

There were people of all ages,
Gathered 'round the gable wall,
Poor and humble men and women,
Little children that you called.

We are gathered here before you,
And our hearts are just the same,
Filled with joy at such a vision,
As we praise your name.

Golden rose,
Queen of Ireland,
All my cares and trouble cease,
As I kneel with love before thee,
Lady of Knock,
My Queen of Peace.

'Though your message is unspoken,
Yet the truth in silence lies,
As I gaze upon your vision,
The truth I try to find.

There you stand with John the Teacher,
And with Joseph at your side,
I see the Lamb of God,
On the altar glorified.

Golden rose,
Queen of Ireland,
All my cares and trouble cease,
As I kneel with love before thee,
Lady of Knock,
My Queen of Peace.

And the Lamb will conquer,
And the woman clothed with the sun,
Will shine her light on everyone,
Yes, the Lamb will conquer,
And the woman clothed with the sun,
Will shine her light on everyone.

Golden rose,
Queen of Ireland
All my cares and trouble cease
As I kneel with love before thee,
Lady of Knock,
My Queen of Peace!

Lady of Knock, My Queen of Peace!

Happy Feast everyone!

Oh Alice, thanks for mentioning Our Lady of Knock -- she kind of ot lost in the "shuffle" being on a Sunday this year. However, my dh has a great devotion to Our Lady of Knock. When we were Austria, and praying to discern where God might want us to go -- my dh did a special novena to Our Lady of Knock. The result was I got to go to Ireland (for the first time) with John-Paul (at 3 months old) to represent our family in a thanksgiving pilgrimage that we had a job after dh finished his schooling.

What a blessing to be able to attend Mass and participate in the shrine activities with my youngest in his backpack! I even wrote it up and got it published in the National Catholic Register!

Since my pilgrimage, I too am enamored of this apparition -- one that is only truly understood by standig in the bleak Irish countryside, on a rainy day, with the shrine in front and realize what made all those folks stand for hours in the rain!

Blessings to all (and a special prayer of thanks to Alice for bringing up this thread!).

I second the prayer of Thanks to Alice! WE had also overlooked this beautiful feast and were able to pull together a lovely little centerpiece for our Sunday dinner table with our Irish Madonna and some very impromtu flowers and your special prayer. I'm so glad we didn't miss this one and especially as today is the Queenship of Mary it ties in so nicely! God Bless and thanks again.

You are all such wonderful women. Many thanks for the many "lifts" you give me every day.

It is a joy to know so many devotees of Our Lady of Knock!
