Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Ladies I want to recommend this book with 5 stars to you all!
This book is really wonderful! (In fact, I'd almost include it in with Catholic Mosaic.)

Its a Mexican retelling of Cinderella, but instead of a fairy godmother, the Blessed Virgin Mary rewards the girl for her goodness! The stepsisters are punished for their sins.

Moreover, I loved the fact that instead of being wowed with her fancy clothes and jewels (she has none), the gold star--the symbol of her virtue --is what attracts the man.

Finally, the love story is not overdone, there is none of this "fell in love at first sight" stuff. Its more like a real courtship!

Nina Murphy mentioned this book before. So, thanks to you Nina!

There are 2 versions available. The Robert San Souci version is the one I am talking about. I have not seen the other one.

Enjoy!

Is this it? Little Gold Star

We enjoyed his Kate Shelley: Bound for Legend, very exciting! My library has several of his other Cinderella books but not Little Gold Star. Bummer! It looks beautiful, CK.

Jennifer,
That is the right one. It's expensive, I know, but I really think its worth the money--something you'll want for your kids and save for their kids.

I'm going to look into Kate Shelley. Thanks!

Clarissa,

Thanks so much for mentioning Little Gold Star -- it does sound like a wonderful keepsake book ... I'm not unwilling to spend a lot if the books are worth it!

Cay did a listing of other cultures' Cinderella books but I'm not sure if she mentioned this one ... off to have a look see myself!

THANKS again for posting!

My library system has three copies of this book. I requested mine, I can't wait to read it.

CK!

THANKS so much for mentioning this book! Maggie LOVES it (we've read it multiple times) and I think we're going to need to go buy it before we wear-out the library copy !

Yes, it's that good! Maggie particularly likes that the Stepmother and stepsisters repent and are getting better in the end ....

Definitely one for Cay to add to Catholic Mosaic, huh?

Mary,
I'm so glad that you liked it! Its certainly my favorite picture book at the moment.

My kids laughed so hard about the donkey ears and horns! And then about spanking Baby Jesus!!

We too thought it was good that they repented...

I agree, it should be "required reading"!
