I agree whole-heartedly with all of you - now that I've seen how truly cluttered life can be while meaning so well, I'm feeling MUCH more motivation to keep working on our own decluttering project. Just when I thought was close to done, I ran out of steam... but it's back!

To atone for my sarcasm, I pledge to be twice as ruthless in my purging as I'd previously planned to be. With the assistance of St. John of the Cross, St. Thomas More, and Blessed Junipero Serra (who, when he founded California, likely never envisioned all these shopping malls), I will endeavor to sever my attachments to earthly goods, while still making provision for the necessities of my state in life. 
(That reminds me... last year, I signed up for a teacher's rewards card at OfficeMax, and had to choose a name for our school. "St. John of the Cross Montessori" was what popped into my head, so that's what we're called. It was always meant to be somewhat humorous -- I mean, when you think of saints who loved small children, you'd think of someone like St. John Bosco, not an austere and solitary Carmelite tormented by spiritual anguish. At the same time, though, there is something very contemplative... almost mystical and ascetic... about Montessori education at its best.
See, I like sarcasm best when it's mixed with literal truth. )

Eleanor, it's funny you mention St. John Bosco. Our homeschool is named St. John Bosco Academy!
But I do think St. John of the Cross seems like a nice fit for a Montessori school!

Ok, just wanted to thank everyone for posting their experience here. I've decided I can't do this without help, so I talked dh into helping me last night :-). He requested lists of things to do in each room (this is more in line with Theresa's simplifying thread, I guess, but really most of the "stuff" that needs sorted, purged, and organized everywhere in the house consists of educational materials, toys, and books! I don't spend much money on anything else.)
Anyway, I've been making these GARGANTUAN lists. I'm pretty sure that dh regrets asking me to do this! On the other hand, what I'm writing down is the absolute ideal. We won't be able to get to all of it before the baby comes, but even if we do a fraction of the decluttering/organizing/sorting/purging, it will still be an improvement!!

Glad to hear the cheerleading brought a smile to your faces --- even I got a boost out of doing it.  This de-cluttering and organizing is hard work and can definitely be overwhelming ... but oh so worth it!
