We made something similar but with only a drill and a hand saw. (My husband is not comfortable using electric saws.) You can see it here. Now I need to whip up some vestments and decide on a name!

I just love seeing how all of you get creative! 
Charlotte, your idea is sooooo cool for those less inclined to sculpt the figure of Father out of the forest offerings! Just great! 
Ok...where are Father Pine, Father Maple and Father Redbud?

Before we made Fr. Birch we were using a wire hanger shaped into a "T" stuck into some clay or playdough.

I just posted what was going to be my second option if Fr. Dowling hadn't worked out and thought I would share it here for anyone who wants their own Fr. Oak but doesn't have the tools. I found a free standing wooden cross at the local Hobby Lobby in the VBS craft section. They were $3 and stand about 7.5 inches high and 4.5 inches wide. You can see it here. This would be simple stand to use for felt vestments. No power tools & no sewing involved!

Jennifer,
I meant to tell you that I was partial to "Fr. Ash" before deciding on "Fr. Dowling" because we actually know a Fr. Ash. Anyone else from Texas could have a Fr. Pecan (it's the state tree) or maybe Fr. Cedar or Fr. Mesquite. It would be fun to see what names people from other states came up with!
I really love this idea and am having to fight the urge to sit down and embroider felt vestments all day. Oh why did I promise the kids that we would go to the pool?

I was concerned that this might have sounded sacrilegious and I wanted to be sure to underscore that I have the utmost respect for the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter's, and for the great Sacrament of Holy Orders in general! Perhaps it wasn't right to make light with that particular play on words. I pray it isn't offensive and is viewed in the humorous light it was intended!  It was definitely NOT intended to downplay or trivialize the great sacrifice and gift of self made by these men in accepting a vocation to the Fraternity!!!!! Just a way of gathering all our wooden representatives/liturgical figures into a brotherhood of sorts.
Thanks for indulging my clarification...and now back to waiting to hear if Charlotte brought felt and her embroidery needle to the pool today!

I cannot wait to gather ideas from you and see how your vestments turn out!!! Father Oak's vestments are nice, but I'd really like to update his stoles. I still have material left from making his originals. Can't wait to see more inspiration from this creative crew!
I never thought of how appropriate this would be in the Year of the Priest, but it is! What a wonderful time to consider adding something like this to your family's living of the liturgical year. There are enough ideas here to inspire and fit into everyone's means and abilities, I think!

Oh no, Jennifer, I resisted the urge! Besides, my kids are splashers more than they are swimmers! And our stand has already been accepted as "Fr. Dowling". It really suits him best! Someone else can have a Fr. Ash. This is turning into such an inspiring activity.
