Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Just had to share this:
I'm stirring dinner and my little dd (5) walks up to me and says "Mama, was the fairy king right or the fairy queen?" Whoa!

Well, I have been thinking about this too. And I don't have any answers. I'm wondering if anyone else has an opinion on this q.

Thanks,
CK

CK,

I haven't read it yet, but I'll try to answer once I do. I have an audio version of the Lamb's and Nesbit version of the play that I hope to listen to this coming week.

Can you tell me the details of the movie that you saw that was good for children? Is this the one you link to at Amazon? I'd like to get it from my library but I need more info.

I also purchased the Sparknotes guide to the play but I still have to print it out.

How is everyone doing with this play?

Ana,
Yes, the Amazon link I posted is the right one.

I found out this version is slightly shortened, bc they had to make it fit into 2 hrs for TV production. But nothing essential is left out.

Here is a little more info, if you're going to try through the library:

BBC Shakespeare Collection, 1981
Starring Helen Mirren, Peter McEnery and Brian Glover.
Directed by Elijah Moshinksy

I think you may be able to find it just by searching for Helen Mirren.

hth,
CK

We really liked the latest movie version with Michelle Pfeiffer and Kevin Kline if I'm not misremembering. Picked it up in the sale bin at Walmart for $5. I thought it was beautifully filmed (hope I'm not suppressing any bad part!).

Kelly, that latest version is my favorite too! There is a bit of nudity implied but the characters are so real and the dialog is so very clear, Marianna and I watch it just for sheer enjoyment.

Oh, and the music? Divine.

We are going to read Bruce Coville's first and then when ds knows the story we will read pieces of the real thing. We also will watch the Michelle Pheiffer/Rupert Everett/Kevin Kline version which I DVR'ed from HBO last week. And then we are going to see the play at Shakespeare in the Park in San Francisco later in the month. I hope he enjoys it as much as I will.
Last ds read Wishbone Classics "Romeo and Juliet" and really enjoyed it. Wishbone Classics are told without Joe and family interspersed through the story and Wishbone is there only to introduce each chapter.
As a side note...Shakespeare's As You Like It has been on HBO alot the last 2 weeks.

Don't forget about Lois Burdett! She has a play for children's version.

I'm sorry if this was already mentioned...I only skimmed the thread!

Hello Ladies!

I finally started some Shakespeare! As a background, the ages of my kids are 11, 9, 9, and 3. We are studying Midsummer Night's Dream. So, I began with a brief synopsis of the play and then we listened to an audio of MSND from Beautiful Stories from Shakespeare.

I was so surprised to see how much they enjoyed it. In fact, I had to play it again for them.

Now what do I do? Where do I go from here? I do have an audio of the actual play from Naxos audio. I printed out the play itself as well. I just don't know if they are ready for the real deal?

Also, I wanted eventually to have the children act out the play (or at least a scene from it) but I wanted to use a prop like puppets, paper dolls, or something to aid us in creating an atmosphere. Any suggestions?

Could somebody link me to where CM talks about Shakespeare study in her books?

Many Blessings,
Ana Betty

Ana,
I think your 11 and 9s are old enough to read through and/or listen to the whole play (maybe at the same time?) next. You could do an act at a time and discuss and narrate. Save the movie till the end.

I think Dover has shakespeare paper dolls. But I think making puppets would be fun! I am thinking about this too. One section of the play that stands alone is the Pyramus and Thisbe play. This could be very funny!

I had my ds memorize Oberon's speech to Puck about getting the flower (his choice) and he'll also do Puck's farewell speech. I think that's a good way to internalize some of the wonderful language of the play. It really is stunning English.
