My 11 year old loves rocks, crystals and all that he can dig up and identify. Does anyone have any favorite geology resources we shouldn't miss?

Jen - I am going to watch the replies with interest. I am getting ideas together for some kind of geology rabbit trail/unit study. I have a lot of rock hounds in my house. I have a crazy day - but when I get a chance I will list some of my initial books and ideas.

All About Our Changing Rocks is a good start for an 11 yo. My 12 yo boy snags this one of this set of books off of our shelf often just to browse. We're impressed with how thorough and child-friendly this series is.
For younger kids, Rocks All Around Us is nice. I didn't link the cheapest one here, but the one with the picture attached.

Rock Hunter is a fabulous book. Very user friendly - great pictures/info, and fun activies/experiments. (I love this whole series)
The Jack Challoner books are all good - I like the experiments and demos. The titles I have from our library I think have changed and been renamed. The titles I had were Rocks & Minerals and Rocks, Minerals, and the Changing Earth.
And Janice VanCleave's geology books are great, as are all her science books. Very complete.
There are many well-done picture books about famous fossil hunters. My 11 year old daughter enjoyed them though you may be past the picture book stage. There are also a number biographies of the same folks that are for a little older reader.

Another helpful idea is find gem and mineral location guides for your area and visit those taht you can. This is one series -Treasure Hunters Gem & Mineral Guide
There are two series from Mountain Press called Geology Underfoot and Roadside Geology. For Illinois it looks like there is only Geology Underfoot in Illinois
One of the absolute best things you can do is go to your local Rock and Mineral show. We went this past fall and it was a fabulous resource. Great displays and demos, lots of knowledgeable rock hounds. I realize what is offered in every location will be a bit different. I found that there is one in Chicago on Memeorial Day weekend.
I have got to run - state baseball playoffs for my son the next two days. I'll add more when we return.
