Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm totally ignorant of the holiday, but I'm intrigued. It looks so beautiful!
What does it mean, and what do you do?

I shared some of what we do for May Day on my blog last year, May Day Baskets.

We also try to do our May Crowning of Mary on May 1.

Happy May Day! Happy Feast of St. Joseph the Worker!

Shawna, I'm so glad you asked because I was going to ask too.

I've always wanted to make May Day a family holiday, but I've never been able to think of how. Thanks for the ideas, guys.

At primary (elementary) school I was forced to dance round a maypole . There is video evidence to prove it.

As a child I had relatives living in Padstow, Cornwall, where they have some fairly spectacular May Day celebrations. The 'obby 'oss terrified me until I was 5 or so. After that it was a big excitement

Not really May Day but related, Filipinos hold a Santacruzan/Flores de Mayo sometime in May. Our two girls participated last Saturday (a little too early as it was still April but that was the only time they could schedule it at the university) -- I'll have it on a blog post by Friday. In the Philippines, the Santacruzan is preceded by novenas and offerings of flowers to Mary every afternoon at church. The only thing I don't like about the culmination mid- or late-month has become more of a beauty pageant than a religious observance; some towns do have more solemn celebrations than others.

We're making May Day baskets on Thursday with a few other kids. And I'd like to explore the Santacruzan, its history/meaning/titles of Mary, Biblical characters, etc. in conjunction with the Blessed Mother notebook activity posted here... starting next week... but we'll probably make it an ongoing thing instead of just in May.

Thanks to all of you! Loved those Blog posts.

Its dark and gloomy here today, and ds says to me this afternoon, "This would be a great day to make some cookies and take then to the neighbors!"

I thought, fantastic plan! Then, using the pattern from Christine's blog, we made some very simple May Day baskets. There are not many flowers up yet, so we decorated them with pretty flower sticker, stuffed them with spring colored tissue paper and warm cookies, and off the kids went. It was so much fun, and surely a tradition we will continue to develop!

As always, I love all that I learn here!

It sounds like you and your dc had a wonderful May Day!

I used the template on Christine's blog, also.

Making the May Day cake was a first, but it was such fun....it's a keeper.

Next year, we'll try making these beautiful baskets that MaryM shared.
