Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

In addition to being Pope Benedict's birthday, today is also St. Bernadette's feast day....does anyone (Jenn GM?) have good recipes for today (I don't feel like Bavarian food )

I'm not going big on cooking today, I'm a little under the weather. I love to follow Jacques Pepin or Julia Child for French ideas. Not all French cooking is fancy and full of sauces. It's not on here, but from Jacques Pepin's Complete Techniques I'm making the Broiled Chicken, because I happen to have a whole chicken defrosted. His technique is to open it up from the back, some other prep tips for the legs and such, brush with oil, add salt and pepper, and broil skin side up.

Or do in 450 oven. 3 1/2 pound roaster won't take more than 35 minutes. You could finish with mustard and bread crumbs and finish under the broiler. Pretty easy...

Oatmeal Pan Bread is a wheat/flour free savory quick bread.

La Petite Poi (sp), or peas for vegetables, or a good French salad. Yummy.

I apologize, but I can't remember the region Bernadette was from. She was a peasant, so her meals were humble. A crusty loaf of French bread would be completely appropriate.

Dessert at this point I would buy!
She's one of my favorite saints. This biography Bernadette of Lourdes by Rene Laurentin made a huge impression on me. I'm not sure if this is the same book that is in print, Bernadette Speaks: A Life of St. Bernadette Soubirous in Her Own Words by Rene Laurentin.

Short biography

She is a great saint to present to the childre because we have actual photographs of her, and her body is incorrupt (although a wax mask to keep it preserved. See The Incorruptibles by Joan Carroll Cruz.

And we have movies that are great to watch. We love the two movies put out by Ignatius Press, and CCC has a video and then there's always "Song of Bernadette".

I can't find the quote now, but St. Bernadette was extremely humble, recognizing that she was just God's instrument. She called herself Our Lady's broom, being used to sweet only when needed. That's a great quote...if I could find it.

Saints and Feast Days had a great suggestion. When Bernadette was supposed to describe how Our Lady looked, she said she didn't look like any of the Marian images she had ever seen. Their suggestion was to find as many Marian images you have around the house and compare. Discuss how seeing a true heavenly vision would be completely different than a statue or picture.

I'm going to lie down now. Happy feast day!

I am running out the door, or I'd search for the link, but MaryM had a wonderful idea for Marian grottos made out of Rice Crispy Treats! They would be perfect for today and easy to pull off if you had Rice Crispy Treat ingredients and small Marian statues on hand.

MaryM, are you there?

Thanks Jenn -- that Oatmeal Pan bread sounds great and I love the idea of searching for Marian images .... Jacques Pepin is a big favorite of mine (this was the only cooking show I ever watched when I watched tv).....My grandmother was FrenchBasque and she used to get so irritated with "French Cuisine" that was overpriced, minimal servings and NOTHING like what she ate growing up....

Alice:
Thanks for reminding me about the rice krispie treats -- that would be a fun add on to the search for Marian images too....

How perfect! I have a pot of ham and bean soup in the fridge, I think I'll pop it in the crockpot to rewarm and we have the best loaf of bread on hand that I've had in a long, long time.

Now if only my library had sent the DVD rather than the VHS of Song of Bernadette we'd have been perfectly set for this Feast day! Oh well...

Jennifer, the pot of ham and bean soup would be perfect as it is very similar to garbure (gar-BOOR) a traditional soup from the Pyrenee Mountain region surrounding Lourdes. Do a google search on garbure and you'll find several recipes. Most also contain cabbage, potatoes and often goose confit. Ham and chicken would also work well. Add a little bread, some cheese and a saucisson sec - a dried sausage you serve sliced, not cooked - and of course a glass of wine! This is one of the most overlooked regions in France and one of my favorites! Bon appétit!

Ooh! I still have a round of cheese from my Easter Basket, I'll have to set it out tonight! A glass of red wine will round out this meal nicely and please my dh to no end, thanks Marjorie!

OK, we really need a "whack upside the head" emoticon! I forgot Bernadette was from the same region of France as my maternal great-grandfather ... that means we have lots of family recipes and anecdotes that can be shared tonight -- especially nice as my mother lives with us and knew her grandfather really well....

But I'm definitely making Pepin's Oatmeal bread -- it sounds great (and very adaptable to breakfast, or dinner or whatever.....)

...though I commented in the thread about what a great idea this was, the credit for this fun twist on grottos goes to MaryMary. (But as you can see names too close to call).
