Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

In PA we're required to do our state study in 4th grade...at least in our school district. Clara and I have had a great time reading and completing her state lapbook. I thought maybe someone else would be interested in using the pre-assembled lapbook that we found.

Thanks, Donna! I think I'm going to follow your example. We're doing Nebraska history this year (also fourth grade) and I think my daughter (Claire) would really love this. We've not done lapbooking yet; I'm hoping this will help us get started!

Donna,

I just looked at the website for Simply Stated. The sample page is a bibliography. Is that what the whole book is? It looks like a great list for Maine, but I am just curious as to whether their is anything else to the book.

Sorry about that, Michelle...missed your post.

Simply Stated does provide a reading list for each state as well as listing the states by region. It also provides a recommended weekly schedule using an atlas, map, sticker book and cook book (all purchased separately...except the map, it's included in the book), along with a calendar schedule used to check off each state as it is studied. The book also gives an alphabetical listing of the states and their abbreviations.

To me, the recommended weekly schedule was most helpful. There are four days on the schedule. Here is Day One:

1. Introduce the state
    a. Name - have child write the state name.
    b. Find state on US map. Look at surrounding states.
    c. Find state in sticker book - apply 4 stickers: flag, flower, bird, license.
    d. Point out key features in state such as rivers, mountains, deserts, lakes, forests.
    e. Locate the capital.
2. Read state story in It Happened in America or appropriate library book.

Donna

I love the look of the lapbook and Simply Stated. I had been planning for the kids to make State Notebooks next year using Trail Guide to US Geography - but I am now not sure. Have you ever looked at the Trail Guide to US Geography and have any opinions on how it compares to Simply Stated? I will have 8 year olds and an almost 11 year old working on the state studies - and my little 3 year old who loves anything to do with States and who would love the sticker book.

Thanks.

Marilyn,

I own the Trail Guide, but not Simply Stated. I can't compare them, but I can tell you that the Trail Guide is very technical. I keep taking it out, and then deciding my kids are too young for it yet.

No, I've never seen it, so I can't compare.
