Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Calico, the Wonder Horse, or the Saga of Stewy Stinker by Virginia Lee Burton

This book is new to us. We were reading all of Virginia Lee Burton's books last month and this one was the favorite of the bunch. The Little House we own and love dearly, but this book captured my son's imagination. He loved the exciting tales, the detailed pictures done in cartoon form, frame-by-frame. The names of the villains he loves to hear rolling off his tongue.

Even though my 5 year old is too young to understand the implied references and humor based on previous movies and comic strips, the book isn't over his head. We have renewed it the maximum number of times, read it 3 nights out of every week, and he has it practically memorized (corrects me if I muddle the words).

Don't be "put off" by the black and white illustrations. It's a grand book and we highly recommend it.

Ours, too. Did I make it sound like they weren't? I think we're color blind here, because b/w illustrations are really popular in this house.

The detail in these pictures are so great. She's so consistent in her characters that each page we can pick out the characters (by the shirt patterns, etc.). I love the bowlegge cowboys and the expresssion on Calico's face.

Jenn, I could tell you liked the illustrations - I was just commenting on that being my favorite part of the book.
