The topic almost was "Help! I'm drowning in my own Saliva"!!!!
I'm 9 weeks along, and I am salivating like crazy. Off and on throughout the day. Sometimes 20 minutes, sometimes for 2 hours. It sometimes takes as little as 20 seconds for my mouth to fill up. If I swallow, I wretch and feel horrible.
Is there anything I can do to relieve this?
The good news is that when I'm salivating, I'm not throwing up.
At night.....I have to lie in bed for about an hour for my body to slow down, which I think is translating into less saliva, THEN I can fall asleep.
Any tips?

Yes, Kacky......it's brought ME a better appreciation for swallowing too!
My 5-dd's prayer the other night was, "Thank you, God, for helping me to swallow and not spit all the time like Mommy."
We are all pretty grossed out by my spit cup. (I guess it's not very feminine of me, is it?) DH says I look like the old-time baseball players.

Oh, I had this during my last pregnancy. And I was SO sick all the time, and the constant saliva just aggravated it terribly. I have no solutions ( sometimes I would just stick a washcloth in my mouth so I didn't have to swallow or spit. I also went through so many boxes of tissues it wasn't even funny.) Yes, I remember feeling really feminine with the washcloth hanging from my mouth

I had this with my last pregnancy, and sour hard candies helped me quite a bit. I don't know if they cut the amount of saliva, or just made it easier to swallow? I know it was no longer an issue a few weeks into my 2nd trimester.
It might be worth a try?

Gum for me Suzanne - when I wasn't throwing up every 5 minutes. Sounds weird, but the gum helped control it.

Ugh, I had this with all my boy pregnancies. Chewing gum helped somewhat. I couldn't do anything mint-flavored, however, not even toothpaste. Cinnamon helped the most. I know all about the spit cup...
With my first boy, I had the saliva thing through the entire pregnancy. It lasted less time with the second boy, and with the third boy, it eased up by the second trimester.
I hope yours doesn't last long!!

OK, so the hard candy and gum WORKS, but only for about 10-15 minutes...which has allowed me to go into public QUICKLY without my spit cup and at least be able to talk to a store clerk with out a mouthful of saliva. But, after 10 min or so, even with a new stick of gum or new candy, it doesn't work anymore. It's like my body figures out I'm trying to trick it.
And, falling asleep with a rag in my mouth has helped too. I don't have to lie there forever.
And, I have to remember to drink lots of water, cuz I'm losing so much that would otherwise be in my body.
It IS interesting that I'm salivating more, but less nausea. Mybe if you don't KNOW to spit it out, you just swallow and that's what increases the nausea? Just wondering out loud...
I'm so afraid now to swallow ANY of it, for fear that I'll throw up.

I had this too. Try to think of how healthy it is for your teeth....:-) more saliva equals less decay, from what I hear.
I carried a handkerchief and went to bed with a rag in my mouth for nine months.

Thought I would pass along what one of my midwives sent to me from her "medical database." There is actually a NAME for this!
Increased saliva. Many women notice they produce more saliva. The medical term for this is 'ptyalism' (pronounced 'tie-al-ism'). Ptyalism can happen on its own but it is usually associated with nausea and vomiting (morning sickness) during early pregnancy. Some remedies for morning sickness may help with the 'drooling', like eating dry, plain cracker biscuits and having small regular meals. Ptyalism will usually subside when the nausea improves (usually by 12 to 14 weeks of the pregnancy). A homoeopath may prescribe 'mercurius solubilis' or 'veratrum album' to help with it. Check with your practitioner.
Relieving symptoms of ptyalism
If you are suffering from excessive saliva production during pregnancy try and reduce the incidence of heartburn, vomiting and nausea. Eat several small meals, including one in bed about fifteen minutes before you get up in the morning. Brush your teeth and use mouthwash after every meal.
Make sure that you maintain your intake of fluid: at least eight glasses daily is recommended. Some women report that sucking on a hard candy helps them swallow the excess saliva produced. Avoid sour candies, which will increase the amount of saliva produced.
Preventing ptyalism
The best thing you can do is just swallow the excess saliva your glands produce. But some women find that this increases their nausea, and they tend to spit it out. If you cannot cope with the extra saliva your body produces, you should drink plenty of fluid to prevent dehydration.
Talk to your doctor about different medications you can try. Most doctors recommend the scopolamine patch, or Transderm Scop®, which reduces the feelings of nausea and causes dry mouth. Some doctors will try antihistamines, but this may cause you to feel even more fatigued during this tiring stage of your pregnancy.

I am so involved with pregnancy.......and I had never heard of this till this post. Thanks for the great info, Suzanne........if it were ME? I would go for the homeopathic first.....see if it would work. I have had such great results from homeopathy..........and it is easier than everything else........I would use it first ......I am naturally lazy.
Praying all of you feel better soon!

This was on some "pregnancy forum" that a friend found:
I spit with all three of my pregnancies, and yes all were boys. Now , I'm on my fourth and yes I'm having the same problem. I have tried sunflower seeds, lemons, and Altoids, also plain salt. They all just make my tongue and jaws raw. I talked to alot of people about my situation, guess what no answer, some people have never heard of this case. It was until one day, I was spitting so bad, I came across this older lady and she said you are pregnant right. I ask how did she know, the spitting gave it away. Anyway she told me to try dry coffee under my tongue and it will dry the spit right up. GOOD NEWS ! She was right. Yes it will make you gag a little when rinse it out. But hey the watery taste is gone. Feels great to go out and without a cup.
