Elizabeth and I just finished the plans for the rainforest unit!! I think I am supposed to be working on Eric Carle but hey, progress is progress right? My kids are about finished with the unit though this topic had so many potential rabbit trails we could have done even more. They are finishing art projects and book reports this week and we are wrapping up. The lapbook is being assembled today after working on the minit books as we went along.

We tried something new this time and used black poster bd instead of a file for the base and used Brites copy paper for the minit books. The poster bd was cut in half and folded as usual. It made for a very bold colored book. I will be uploading our pics in the next 24hrs if all goes well. (ie I can figure out how to get them on here <g> )

There are many links in some of the sections listed. Please don't feel obligated to pursue them all. They provide work for students from early elem. through teen yrs so choose what is appropriate for your family. Enjoy! Kim

Thanks Kim, and Elizabeth. These units are tremendous and such a memorable addition to our curriculum.

Wow! The plans look great. Thank you both for the work you did putting them together. How many weeks did you spend on the unit?

We planned for two weeks. I plead the fifth on how many weeks ago that was. Kim?

Elizabeth,
I'm sorry my question was unclear. I wanted to ask how long you and your children spent learning about the rainforests.
Thanks.

Cheryl,
We planned for it to take two weeks. But, we began and all kinds of things happened in our families: transcontinental trips,Holy Week and Easter and some time spent on those notebooks, serious illnesses, retirement parties, sacrament celebrations, car accidents, and the Holy Father's death. We both got derailed more than once and we've been plugging a little here and there for quite a while.

In a perfect world, you could adequately cover it in two weeks.

I can neither confirm nor deny... ; o   We had grand plans to do this right after Christmas break didn't we Elizabeth? And that would have much way more fun than a prolonged childbirth recovery, flu, an open house for 60, and extended husband/work issues for both families. Sigh! Life happens. So the rainforest was tucked in here and there.

Depending on how in depth you wanted to go and how many projects you did (and how much *life* happens at your house ; )) it could take from a week to a month to work straight through. The mural takes time as do the craft and science project bks if you want to complete more than one of each. You could focus on science one week, art/crafts/poetry another, and history/culture yet more. We didnt get to nearly all the great things we could have.

Here are Kim's Rainforest Lapbook pics!

This is the first extension flap shown closed in the pic above and lifted up in the next image. There is another extension that folds down (the page my daughters jungle pic is on)

Kim,
Thanks so much for the great pictures. I'm planning on doing your rainforest unit in May. Since I've never made a lapbook before, these will be very helpful.

This unit w/ visual aids is wonderful! I'm looking forward to doing it with my boys, especially because I think that the littles can participate and maybe make mini books themselves. Thanks for all of your hard work ladies! Our schooling would be dull w/o the help of everyone on this board!

I'm excited about this... THANKS!
My DS saw a nature special last night about the Amazon, and ever since has been pointing it out on our wall map! So, off to the library I raced, picking up some of the mentioned books...
and he was very excited to say the least.
Now... I wonder if he is expecting more 'chicken spiders' ?

Question about the rainforest plans: I'm planning on doing this unit next week. I've discovered that the units we've done that my children really got a lot out of always had a chapter book read aloud that we did along side it. Any recommendations for a rainforest related chapter book read aloud for ages 5-8?

I hit post too quickly! I also meant to give a big thanks to Kim and Elizabeth for these plans! Your plans have been such a lifesaver to me this year! I'm hoping to try putting some together on my own in June for use in July,August and Sept. Thank you for sharing!

It may not be prize winning literature, mind you, <g> but the Magic Tree House "Afternoon on the Amazon" is a chapter book for that age group that works well. There is a study guide that goes with it that is nice. If you find some other good chapter books please let me know and I will add them to the booklist/plans.

One Day in the Tropical Rainforest by Jean Craighead George is another short one we enjoyed. It inadvertently was left off the list.

Thanks, Elizabeth and Kim for all the great ideas on the Rainforest AND lapbooking. This has proven to be the PERFECT segue from the Jesuit reductions of South America (our History unit) into Science (and beyond...) We're really having a great time, too, blasting out of the Binders mode into lapbooking. What fun!

I wanted to add that the soundtrack of the movie, "The Mission" is really beautiful, with lots of Latin chants set to pan pipes, woodwind music and so on. There's a little incidental music (which is ho-hum), but mostly it's a very nice, "rainforest" oriented, cd.
