I came home the other day and my husband was reading Red Badge of Courage to our son. Our son is 5 years old.
He said: 'He's had enough of this girly stuff like Matilda and Winnie the Pooh, it's time for some man books."
I lovingly praised him for his efforts to be involved and suggested that Red Badge might be a bit over our son's head just yet... so I promised to find a good boyish chapter book for them to share together.
Dh grumbled: "How 'bout Hatchet? Is he too little for that?" I said we should wait until he gets a wee older so he can appreciate it more.
So any ideas for age-appropriate boyish books?

We did Farmer Boy as a family read aloud last summer and it was a smashing hit with my boys, ages 4 and up.

My little guy adored Billy and Blaze.
Also, anything by Lois Lenski (The Little . . .) or Bill Peet (rhyming).

My boys enjoyed "The Hobbit" at an early age. Also consider the Tom Playfair books from TAN as he gets older.
We also loved "Sign of the Beaver", "My Side of the Mountain" and "The Indian in the Cupboard".

We just finished "My Father's Dragon" and it was GREAT! Even though we're all girls over here, it's a great boy-book.
Also for boys....
Dolphin Adventure
The Boxcar Children
Surprise Island (also a Boxcar Children book)

I just wanted to say thank you for this thread and also add another thought.
First of all, since this, we've read some of the Just So Stories and Farmer Boy... and the boys have loved them! So thank you.
Also, I wanted to suggest to others if they need yet another idea is to read Carlo Collodi's "Pinnochio".
This had a lasting impression on my son and it still reappears in his imaginative play.
Finally, we have just begun The Princess and the Goblin and it is a lovely lovely book and anything with goblin-type creatures is a sure win in this family!

Searching around on some Listmania Lists for a few things the other day and came across this list from a mom of three boys:
Favorite Read Aloud Books For Boys. She has a wide variety and her comments are helpful!

We just finished Farmer Boy- the 4 year old and 6 year old boys ADORED it, and even the 2 year old girl got into it.
We just started The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardobe for a read aloud and they REALLY like that.
Thanks for the other suggestions!

Can someone please define a *read-aloud* to me??? I thought it was meaning books for me (as Mom) to read aloud to my DC. However, I am guessing based on the books suggested read alouds mean for the DC to read them aloud????
Not to hijack this thread ....but..... are there any good suggestions to good boy books for the 2 - 4 yr range????
TIA ladies!

Oh I think it's meant as for the adult to read to the child. Just because a child may be able to read a book him/herself doesn't mean that it can't or shouldn't be read aloud to them.
I tend to let my toddlers pick the books that they like. My almost 4 yr old loves the books with Biscuit (a puppy) because she LOVES that puppy
Toad and Frog are liked here. I got them for an older child to read but the little ones love hearing them too.
