Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We have an opportunity this month to see art in the making! Wyland will be just a few miles up the road painting his 95th and final United States mural in Key Largo.

Robert Wyland was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1956. When he was 14 years old he traveled to Laguna Beach, California to visit an aunt and saw whales for the first time. It changed his life. He began painting and is now the world's premier ocean artist with Whaling Walls throughout the United States as well as Canada, Japan, Australia, Mexico, France and New Zealand. He painted the largest mural in the world in Laguna Beach, CA. He works in oils and watercolors, and sculpts in bronze, pewter and Kalonite.

Live Webcam in Key Largo, FL.

Wyland's Website click on the Virtual Tour to view Wyland's studio and explore the various tabs at the top of the page to learn more about Wyland (the History under Who is particularly nice.)

The Wyland Foundation a non-profit organization where Free Curriculum goodies can be found like very attractive Rivers and Ocean Eco-Guides, Teacher's Art and Science Guides and some Animal Cards that make me think Montessori-style thoughts! I'm certain something fun could be done with them!

Click on your country to see the Whaling Wall nearest you on the Global Map!

Wyland is a very prolific artist.
Search the Gallery and choose your favorites for this month, or just watch the Whaling Wall develop in Key Largo over the next 12 days!

This is one we can do very easily! We have quite a few of his pieces around our home and a few of his books also. I love his work. I always try to visit his gallery in San Diego when we are there.

Thanks for posting about his gallery here in SD, MaryChris. We'll have to make a visit.

Edited to say, 'Wow'! His murals are all over southern California! I've seen many, surely, without realizing exactly what they were. My kids will be thrilled with this study.

Thanks for all the links, Jennifer.

You're welcome, Ladies!

Erica, Wyland is very prolific isn't he? This mural in Key Largo is his 95th life size painting of large sea creatures. Make sure you look on the Global Map and click on your location. Lots along the coasts, including the Virginia, Maryland, D.C. area, Mary Chris, (your location line says Virginia). It's a little closer than San Diego!

Don't think you are limited to those pieces of art I selected above either. Check out the Gallery and see what you'd like the best. Abstract, life size, bronze, brush paintings, there is plenty to choose from!

Here in the Keys, we have had some unusual rain that has slowed things down a bit. It'll be interesting to see if he still gets done by the 12th of February! I've updated daily and the lastest picture is an upclose shot. We thought it looked a little streaky or runny after the downpours this weekend. Wyland did manage two Manta Rays which you can see quite well on the Live Webcam. Go to Choose A View and select Ray 1 or 2.

There is a Whaling Wall (his first) here in Portland. We'll have to drive into town and find it! This is so exciting!

Erica....the gallery is down at Sea Port Village, there may be more than one, but we like to ride the carousel and get gyros down there.

I have seen quite a few of his Whaling Walls, all the ones he did in Hawaii before 1995 . Including the one blocked by the Hawaii Prince Hotel. The one in the pool at Mission Beach, and most of them between San Diego and L.A.. I have also seen the one at the National Zoo and the one in Baltimore. Hopefully, next time we go to Norfolk we won't be experiencing hurricane like conditions and we will be able to see out of the car windows a little more clearly .

We have at least three of his posters, Tales of Great Whales, Whale Rides, and Dolphin Rides. Then we have a signed print of Orca Mist. I don't think I can insert the pictures here.

It was neat to see the picture of Wyland with Marianne. The last time I saw him he still had the Tom Selleck style mustache.    Thank you again Jennifer for picking Wyland. It has been fun flipping through and looking at his work. I get to feel so landlocked here in Virginia. Wyland keeps the California and Hawaii in me . Just what I needed to counter the freezing weather we are having here!

Wyland painted a mural inside the new NEX in Hawaii. He signed a painting that our neighbor painted and really encouraged her. He also gave her a signed poster that his mom helped her roll up. His mom said she had lots of practice poster rolling.

I seem to remember some controversy about his mixing animals that would not be seen in the same ecosystem(?) in the ocean. Am I thinking of the right artist?

Here is our latest update!

I hear that from divers down here occasionally, so I asked and it turns out that years ago he put a Pacific Ocean fish in an Atlantic Ocean senario or vice versa. They were appalled. My take on it? It is art, not a field guide.    Look to the Reef Fish Identification Book not the painting hanging on a wall for fish id.   I also couldn't find anything online to support this story though I didn't spend that much time sorting through stuff, I have to confess!

On the other hand, Wyland doesn't just paint a dolphin or whale or orca in general. He paints a portrait with a specific animal in mind. So there is a Wall with a famous whale, Salt, on the East Coast and the Orcas in the Pacific Northwest Walls are Vancouver's Pod #7 (I think I got the number right! Too late to look it up tonight.) He is very fond of that orca pod and paints them frequently in such detail that individuals can be identified.

How do you feel about Controversy in Art, or is that for another thread?

It may be a new month but we are still in our Wyland studies! The huge rain we had last month delayed the Wall so much that Wyland came back and painted for another week to try and finish it up. He then jetted off to the Bahamas to film a shark documetary that will air this fall and came back to his home in Islamorada (the key just south of Key Largo where he recently purchased a house) and the funniest reports have been going around - Hey! someone in a hoodie was painting on Wyland's Wall early this morning and he was really good!
Ummm...you don't think that maybe it was Wyland now, do ya?

Anyway, we went to an unveiling of a new bronze tiger shark sculpture at one of the Key West Galleries and got a chance to chat with Wyland again and watch him paint as well.

I've entitled the post Wyland's Glasses for a reason...check it out! Lots of pictures included of the Wall in Key Largo as well.
