I am looking ahead to the fall and wondering what I should do with my 7 year old for religion next year. He will be making his FHC in June.
I am definitely doing the Baltimore Catechism 1, and had planned to do the Angel Food books along with it using Jen's handy spreadsheet, but somehow I missed that it works with the #2 catechism, so maybe I should wait to get it for a few years? Is there something similar I can use along with the #1 Catechism?
Other titles I am considering are:
Catholic Stories for Boys and Girls
My Path to Heaven
A Life of Our Lord for Children
I just wanted some nice stories or a nice book to go along with our study of the catechism, not really a religion program. Oh, we also already use Catholic Mosaic.

Jodie,
We love those stories! We already read them on a fairly regular basis. He really enjoys the Windeatt books, we only have a few of them. Maybe I could get a few more, but I still feel like that's not enough. I love the idea of having a sweet little story for each day that is related to the teachings of the Church.

I use it with Baltimore Catechism #1 as well. It works nicely with both #1 and #2!
Those are all wonderful, and we enjoy them all. I save My Path to Heaven for around 4th grade, just because I use a number of other things during our FHC prep year. And we read A Life of Our Lord for Children with that time period for history, so it isn't included this year either usually. But, definitely the Catholic Stories for Boys and Girls!
Other books we'll be reading next year:
First Communion and After by Mother Mary Loyola First Confession by Mother Mary Loyola - I need to do a side-by-side comparison to see if this is a duplicate of a chapter in Mother's book, First Communion and After. It might be. Learning to Follow the Mass compiled and edited by Lisa Bergman - this is a lovely, lovely missal for learning the Latin Mass, perfect for young children (and great for me, too!!) Lovely full color illustrations - great quality print! The Mass Explained to Children by Maria Montessori Baltimore Catechism #1 with the Angel Food stories by Father Brennan Story Library of the Saints by Joan Windham - coordinated with the liturgical year/feast day of the saint
...and others.
Be sure to check out the amazing First Communion Resources thread, Krista! That's on my to-do list as I am just getting started planning for my rising 2nd grader!

Sorry! I should have been more clear in my original post... yes, he will be making his FHC this coming June. We are so excited! We are actually using a lot of the texts you recommended. Mother Loyola's First Communion is a favorite! What lovely meditations! :)
I am looking forward to using the Angel Food books, but I think I will hold off until he's using the second catechism. I have other children behind him and we can do them together at that point. So... that's a few years away.
I think we'll also be reading A Life of Our Lord for Children in history, so I will probably leave that there. I am leaning heavily towards the Catholic Stories for Boys and Girls... unless you have more recommendations!?

I think Angel Food can be used over and over again. I use them more for enjoyable reading, not tied to lessons or questions. The stories stay in the mind, and my son has wanted to repeat them often.
My son is making his FHC this May, so we're in the same boat. I was thinking of focusing on the Mass and the Bible, using the old Crusade Magazine series. I haven't gotten much farther in my plan, though.
I was going to look at the Inos Biffi books for the Illustrated Catechism and see what age for those.

Now I am considering a year of studying the Mass using that lovely missal you linked, Jen, along with the Maria Montessori book.
Would that be comprehensive enough? Would anyone have any ideas to add to flesh it out a bit?

I think that would be wonderful! Do keep in mind that both of these are really written more for the Latin Mass (1962 rite), so they won't reflect the postures and responses that are different in the Novus Ordo Mass. That could be confusing to your child if you regularly attend the Novus Ordo Mass, and that's really the only reason I mention it. (This is definitely NOT a statement of preference, I just want to make sure that the difference is pointed out so you can consider it in light of the needs of your family! )
Maria Montessori's book, though written when the older Mass form was still in use, is still a beautiful explanation of the Mass for children.
There are some wonderful books on the Mass that are more reflective of the postures and responses for the Novus Ordo. If you're interested in some of those ask away and we can link some for you! You might also check out this thread - Teaching the Mass for some more ideas.

We attend both forms of the Mass; we are blessed to attend one of two parishes that host the EF Mass once a month. My son has already been asked to learn to serve at the EF Mass once he has received his First Holy Communion and I got to thinking that it would be a good idea for him to have a better appreciation and familiarity of the EF for that purpose.
We do also attend the OF Mass most Sundays, though. I would love some recommendations for books on the OF.
Thank you! (And I will run go look at that thread!)

I don't think we are getting the new responses in Canada yet, although I fear we will be quite lost when we go home to my parents' house in the States!

Oh, and I did also purchase My Path to Heaven, and I raided my bookshelves and found a copy of Rare Catholic Stories we haven't used yet, so I think we'll be good!
ETA: I also have Understanding the Mass for Mom to read. I think it'd be good for me to have that all fresh in my mind for discussions.
