Hi all,
I wanted to put together a fun study of dinosaurs for my 4 year old daughter this school year. So far I have :
An Eyewitness-type book with color pics
A Dover Dinosaur coloring book
A How to Draw Dinosaurs book
A few coloring pages from Enchanted Learning and
A few craft ideas for paper mache eggs, masks etc.
Yawn Sounds kind of boring, huh? And, I don't really know what to do with all of this stuff? Just read it? I wanted her to have a lot of fun, maybe make fossils etc. She is a hands on kind of gal, so she will get very bored if I just read to her the whole time. (She likes to color and trace, hence the other two books.)
Has anyone already done a cool study on dinosaurs that they wouldn't mind sharing? I used to really LOVE dinosaurs at her age, and thought she might too!

You can do the lapbook, but you don't have to. There are also other great ideas listed here!

Our favorite dino activity for that age for dd's b-day was to mix sand and rocks and little shells with sand and water and toss in plastic dinos and freeze.
The kids "excavated" with paintbrushes and little shovels.
Vey messy and fun

Maggie,
Ah, that would be a VERY big hit around here. Probbly with my older boys too! For some reason, my eldest if forever freezing things in the freezer such as army men, dinosaurs, leaves, etc., and then will protest if I try to get rid of them saying they are "relics". They would LOVE it if I actually suggested freezing plastic dinosaurs and such. MAYBE Gracie would get to work on it too!
Thanks to everyone for all the great ideas and books links. Dinosaurs are just great, aren't they?

We're suddenly into dinosaurs this year, too. One book I can't seem to stop reading
The Magic School Bus in the Time of Dinosaurs
I think its one of the originals - where the book came first and then the cartoon (the tv show first and then the book versions are just painful to read, IMO)
I'm definitely going to have to try excavating dinosaurs around here.

There's no substitute for the real thing.
Is there a museum with a dinosaur exhibit you can visit?
What about a dig site? We have one about 35 miles from us, and on Saturdays in the summer the public can come and participate in the dig. It is a prehistoric site where dinosaur bones have been found.
Or else, why not dig in your own yard? If you own your property and have a suitable place, host a "dig" for your children. Invite friends or neighbors. This is not directly "dinosaur" related, but it does imitate the process used by scientists to find an unearth dinosaurs. Who knows, maybe you'll find a Native or pioneer relic which will set you off on a whole new "rabbit trail."
