For this month's Artist Study we have decided to focus on several different depictions of the Assumption by various artist. Hopefully it will be a great addition to the celebration of the feast day later this month. Also it is a good way to compare and contrast style and technique of art pieces that focus on the same event/theme.
We will be posting the selected paintings later today.

Artist: Fillipo Fortunato Venuti
There is little information about the artist but there is information about the parish where this painting is located St George's Basilica in Malta. It has a wonderful history section, with early Christian art, and a timeline, it is incidentally where St Paul was shipwrecked! It is really neat.

Artist: Titian
Titian painted "Assunta" over the course of two years, from 1516-1518, it was a great sensation because of his use of dramatic colour.
Find more information on Titian here. The part where it talks about his painting of the Assunta is under the heading "Growth".

The Assumption of the Virgin
Artist: Annibale Carracci
Located in the Prado, Madrid, painted 1590.
Compare this to Carracci's other painting of the Assumption painted between 1600-1601 in Rome.

We have selected the 4 paintings for the study, but the following icon was added to the study as it has an interesting story from Orthodox tradition.
Assumption Girdle (St Thomas receives the Virgin's Girdle)
Because Thomas was evangelising in India at the time, according to the writings of Joseph of Arimathea, is said to have been miraculously transported to the Virgin's tomb and singularly witnessed her Assumption into heaven. In which she imparted to him her girdle.
See the article here . See heading "Thomas and the Assumption of Mary". The Eastern Orthodox church have a Tradition that the Virgin did indeed die (The Dormition) and then bodily rose again, and was assumed into Heaven.

Here is a short analysis of the Titan's Assumption.
Thought it might help as you look at the paintings. I like the description of the three orders in the compostion:
At the bottom are the Apostles (humanity), amazed and stunned by the wondreous happening. St. Peter is kneeling with his hand on his breast, St. Thomas is pointing at the Virgin, and St. Andrew in a red cloak is stretching forward. In the middle, the Madonna, slight and bathed in light, is surrounded by by a host of angels that accompany her joyfully hailing. Above is the Eternal Father, serene and noble majesty, calling the Virgin to him with a look of love.

And I just came across this already assembled collection of Assumption art. Wow. It is obviously not complete (it doesn't include the Venuti or the icon) but it is pretty amazing. Click on the image for a topic specific page and you can enlarge images there.
The whole site (Biblical Art on the WWW) is new to me and quite incredible. It includes a ton of religious art assembled by topic (or artist) and is very easy to navigate and search.
