Molly, isn't that just such a beautiful title? I am so glad you have started this thread!
That title really appeals to me because most people has some stubbon knot in their life! (or maybe a few ) and just think how we would run to our mums to untie that stubborn knot from a shoe or sneaker. They couldn't get it out quick enough and we just didn't have a hope doing it ourselves.
I dearly would like to get hold of the novena for that title sometime in the future...I can't seem to find a free one on the internet and that it must be bought.
Here is a thread where I give a link to a prayer cloth Mary, undoer of knots and it will mention more about it.
Here is the beautiful picture:
I would love to hear any personal stories if anyone has any to share.
Here is the the main website.

The complete picture is here, where you can see the Archangel Raphael leading Tobias at the bottom. This is in a church in Augsburg in Bavaria.

Stephanie, I'd have to re-read different sites to know this and you might know already - is that because this is the 'orginal' home of the image and title?

I'm am glad you mentioned about Tobias and Archangel Raphael as my husband and I have great devotion to St Raphael - he brought us together, no doubt! We also pray to him whenever we hop in our car to drive.

Yes. Johann Georg Melchior Schmidtner painted Maria Knotenlöserin around the year 1700. This painting is well known in german speaking countries and you can find copies of it in other churches.
Molly, I did find a Novena in German. Did you google for it?

I took a crack at it...this isn't perfect, but I think it's the gist. The brackets are mine; parentheses are from the original.
Quote:
Whoever enters the church of St. Peter of Perlach (?) in Augsburg will find on the right aisle [?--lit. "side of the ship"] many men and women in prayer before an unusual representation of Mary.
The picture is called "Mary, Undoer of Knots." Are the people expecting from Mary the solution to their life problems?
Possibly their hopes of energetic assistance from Mary are justified; look at the two small figures under Mary's feet. They represent the Angel Rafael and the youth Tobias. Tobias was led by the angel (in the long run, angels always mean God Himself) out of a dark situation [lit. "life-landscape"] into the light.
That is the foundation of our faith: It is God, who accompanies and leads, who heals [_____ Verwundugen—can't find this word] and unravels the entanglements of our lives.
That is also the ground on which Mary stands: because she herself had faith, she can be a model of faith for others.
Whosoever believes this can no longer be [worn by] evil (one considers, how the knotted rope at Mary's feet corresponds with the interlocking of the volume). [not sure what "the volume" means—perhaps the Scriptures?]
Rather, he or she becomes able to entrust his or her own life-knots to the unfathomable God, and readily and patiently take care of the life-knots of others—like Mary.
Then also the words spoken to Mary apply to those who pray in confidence:
"Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled." (Luke 1:45) |
|
|
I really like that part about entrusting our own knots to God so that we can help untangle the knots of other people. That's something to meditate on, eh?

Oh, I like that part too!
Lissa Good Job! Thank you.
Verwundungen would be injuries or vulnerabilities.
In this case, Bandes is the genitive form of Band which can mean a volume(of books) OR a ribbon, which is meant here.
A 'Haarband' is a hair ribbon.

Can you tell what sort of crisis our home is currently experiencing?

Thank you for telling me about prior ordering from this site, it is my first time, and it seems a bit pricey, but the sacramentals seem wonderful. And as you said Wendy is helpful, and seems to be a dear woman!

I had a draft for a post on this devotion, entitled "The Tangled Web we Weave" -- I need Mary to help undo all the messes in which I get tangled. I don't think I'll finish the post, but I'll just share what I found. It's a mishmash!
Besides this being a German painting, there is great devotion in Brazil to this Marian title. The Brazilian devotion reminds me of Our Lady of Guadalupe....she will take care of us.
Mother in me...Mommy untangle this, fix this. Our Blessed Mother can undo our big spiritual and emotional knots and worries. I really like this little prayer:
MARY, LOOK AT ME
Mary, untie the knots, untie all the knots in me,
you are my guide and my helper; please untie the knots for me.
My life is a bundle of knots, I bring you my soul, my dreams,
plead for me before your Son; send down an angel for me.
Mary, untie the knots, untie all the knots in me, you are my intercessor, untie my knots, set me free.
Oh, Mary...Oh, look at me, Blessed Mother, I need your help,
the knots within me are so many I can’t untie them myself.
Mary, untie the knots, untie all the knots in me,
in you I will put my trust, untie my knots, set me free.
With my troubled soul I ask that you untie my knots for me,
give me a little bit of you, don’t forsake me,
help me please.
Mary, untie the knots, Untie all the knots in me,
You are my only mediator, untie my knots, set me free.
Through your love is that I live after kneeling before you,
and as I asked in my prayers,
you fill me with hope and comfort.
Mary, untie the knots, Untie all the knots in me,
Oh, Virgin, you are my salvation,
At last, your hands I have seen. Amen

Mary's Helper
Short Novena to Our Lady Untier of Knots
Say the following prayers for a period of nine days, lighting the candles before the Image of the Virgin Mary. The light of the candles signifies our faith and hope in Jesus who illumines our path.
Merciful Virgin Mother of Christ who with your pious hands unties the knots that cause our hopelessness, I come to you to beg with all my heart.
Remember Oh Most Blessed Virgin Mary, that non one who has had recourse to thee implore your help or sought your mercy was ever abandoned. Encouraged with confidence we present ourselves before thee, crushed beneath the weight of our sins. In our misery, Oh Virgin of Virgins, despise not our petitions, but mercifully grant our request. Amen.
In the Gospel of Jesus written by Matthew.
Jesus said: "Come to me all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart, and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy and my burden light."
No one in Heaven is cloer to God more than you, sustain me with your maternal embrace so that the evil that anguishes me will disappear from my life. Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace...
Through your prayers deliver me from what worries me. You who suffer beneath the Cross of Jesus, please do not despise my petitions but deliver me from all danger. Oh Blessed Virgin Mary who unties the knots. Amen.
Hail Mary full of grace...
Mary Untier of Knots.
Pray for us.

Can you tell me more about a painting of the Virgin Mary with a white cord full of knots?
Mary, Untier of Knots" Rosary from Printery House

Virgin painting ties Brazilians in knots
Maria Knotenlöserin
Right Hand Column:
And why ‘knot’? — An 18th century German painting hanging in a church in Bavaria for 300 years, depicts Mary with a long white ribbon. (In traditional German wedding ceremonies a couple’s hands were bound in such a ribbon.) It seems a divorce loomed in a wealthy German family in the 1700s. A priest friend asked for this painting to be commissioned of our Blessed Mother undoing their “knots” of marital unhappiness. The couple eventually reunited and Johann Schmittdner’s painting was forgotten. But 20 years ago a copy was brought to Argentina where devotion to “Mary Untier of Knots” took on a life of its own, with fervor sometimes bordering on superstition. Prayer groups throughout South America and even on this side of the border have now taken this Mary to their hearts. Today’s devotion says: “Ask Mary to undo the knots in your home or even your business, as well as in the little everyday things that irk you.”
Amy Welborn
Cukierski Apostolate
Official Prayer to the Virgin Mary as Untier of Knots
Holy Mary, full of the presence of God, during your life you accepted with great humility the holy will of the father and the legacy of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, and evil never dared to entangle you with its confusion.
Since then you have interceded for all of our difficulties as you did at the wedding feastof Cana. With all simplicity and with patience, you have given us an example of how to untangle the knots in our complicated lives.
By being our mother forever you arrange and make clear the path that unites us to Our Lord.
Holy Mary, Mother of God and ours, with your maternal heart, untie the knots that upset our lives. We ask you to receive Into your hands (…here mention your prayer request…) and deliver us from the chains and confusion that restrain us.
Blessed Virgin Mary, through your grace, your intercession and by your example, deliver us from evil, and untie the knots that keep us from being united to God. So that free of all confusion and error, we may find him in all things, keep him in our hearts, and serve him always in our brothers and sisters. Mother of Good Counsel pray for us. Amen.
Please forward to friends. With a Fraternal embrace in Jesus and Mary:
