Janet, I'm leaning toward buying the nice stand Alison's sells. It is lined with velvet for no scratching, doesn't that sound nice. I mayhave to just lay them on a shelf as well, depending upon price.

Aah - but my budget is spent and my shelves are not long enough. I'll have to just come up with something, but maybe some soft, inexpensive fabric from our fabric bin will help to line whatever I get. I do have to get them off the family room floor, all lined up neatly and enticingly. So far they've been ok and even the dog seems to walk around them (smart girl) but I sure cannot chance it much longer so I'll have to come up with some sort of solution. For some reason, these are not enticing the boys to sword games, just looking at them and watching me line up and compare and measure to make sure they actually meet specs. I've become a real nut about this.

This is along the lines of what I may have to do, a nice tall umbrella stand??? or basket lined with velour fabric (I have tons left-over from my dd's skating days) The only problem is the smaller ones will be in the bottom
Any ideas here ladies about how you store (or house)your long rods, be they blue/red or red???
Blessings!

I was actually hoping I could get my dh to build a simple rectangular, tallish box that I would line in velvet or felt. I'm not sure how else to do it either. I do have some space between a shelf and the wall that the tall box could go in.
If not that, I may sew a simple (albeit long) pouch for them out of felt or another pretty fabric. Something akin to a little rollable picnic type pouch that you store your silverware in. Then they can be on the very top shelf.

Oh now there's an answer to prayer! What about a large piece of felt cut to the longest rod, then pockets for each progressively smaller adhered with hot glue, or sewn on??? This sounds like an afternoon project I could then attach a piece of ribbon to the outside and roll it up, viola, you're brilliant Jennifer, thanks for a great suggestion!

I fear that these fine specimens we've purchased (we're not talking Nienhuis quality here ) will chip easily if stored upright in something like an umbrella stand, even if the stand itself is lined with soft fabric. I lean towards the fabric pouch ideas Jennifer and Meredith came up with. I haven't seen the picnic / flatware storage pouch Jennifer mentioned, but I imagine it is much like the storage pouch I have for my knitting needles!
Just brainstorming here ... What about taking a large piece of felt or other such fabric, as long as the longest rod but add almost a rod's length. Fold it in half and create the individual "pouches" for each rod by simply sewing the front to the back. You would have to stitch them horizontally as well, to create "bottoms" for each pouch. The entire thing can be rolled and fastened with ties.
Another way to do it would be to make it so you can put two rods in each pouch --- the 1 and the 9, the 2 and the 8, etc. --- stitching in between to keep them separate. 10 would be by itself. If done this way, I envision actually cutting two separate pieces of felt, one about 8" longer than the length of the longest rod and the other about 4" shorter than the longest rod. The extra 8" on the larger piece would be "ends" to fold over on either side before rolling them up (to protect rods and keep the "1" rod from falling out). The smaller piece would be centered on the larger piece to allow room for inserting and removing the rods on both ends. Once again, simple stitching would create the actual pouches for each rod. Actually, I think this idea would work better because then one end of the entire pouch would not be lopsided. Can anyone make sense of what I'm trying to describe??? I can see it clearly in my head but putting it into words, that's another matter!
In terms of placement, our numerical rods will be on the floor, adjacent to the math cabinet. I plan on laying out a piece of felt for them as the floor is tile and I know they'd get scratched or chipped in an instant! Next to them will be the sandpaper numerals and number cards. Because our math cabinet is in our family room I will not be keeping the rods out all of the time and will probably make a pouch to store them in when not in use! Thanks for the great ideas, ladies!

That's a perfect idea Kristin. I think that'd work really well. I'm concerned felt might not be sturdy enough to be opened and closed a lot - anybody have any thoughts on that? I might do the inside in a felt and the outside in a cotton poplin.
Of course all this will have to wait until I get over the extreme icky's! It will be hard to be patient! But this definitely is the idea I'm going to run with.

I just finally made mine out of wood (only 1 cm thickness, but the correct length) - previous to this, we used shorter cardboard ones just for the concept of 1-10 (I decided we needed the length for the concept of length as well...). Both red and blue for less than $18, including paint and finish which I have tons left over.
Storage though.... I just noticed that one of my wider bookshelves allows me to the put the shelf down quite low, so I'll move that down lower, so the rods can still be accessed, then I THINK the pink tower will fit up above - I could put a box or another small counter shelf in there for added storage space.... (I'm typing as I think of all this) I think I might just have a full-fledged sensory cabinet/shelf, and I didn't even know it!
I just checked - the 90cm and 100cm will NOT fit.
It was an idea and still worth exploring if I put the shelf up higher on a long ugly table I have and maybe put the longer ones in front?
Still thinking.

CatholicMommy, sorry to hear that your rods will not fit on the shelf as you had hoped. I am sure, however, that you will find another solution to your problem --- and who knows, it just might be a better one!!!

How heavy or bulky would these be? If there was space, and it didn't look too cluttered, could you place hooks under your shelves or on a wall perhaps behind the shelf, and attach loops to your pouches to hang them horizontally. Well, I guess this wouldn't work if your shelves are too short initially. Maybe there is a place to hang them vertically such as the back of a closet door or out of site at the back side of a clothes closet, on the wall as you reach through the clothes? I wish I could be more helpful.
