Last year a group of us here had a fabulous time participating in the Journey North Mystery Class. Anyone on board for doing it again this year? It starts next week!

Yes, we would love to do it again! But if there are more that want to do it this year we would step aside so that we wouldn't take someone's place who hadn't gotten to do it last year.
For anyone just reading this who didn't do it last year - it was a great learning experience. Highly recommended!

Lissa,
We're up for it again, but like MaryM said if there are others who didn't get a chance last year, we can certainly give them our spot.
Natalia,
It is a VERY cool project. Every Monday you're given the amount of sunlight ("photoperiod") at your "mystery" site. This, compared to the photoperiod at your own city (so you know the longitude and latitude) will help you pinpoint your mystery site. For instance, ours last year was "easy" because the site had basically 24 hours of sunlight until the Vernal Equinox, when all of a sudden it went to less than 24 and we knew it had to be the Antarctic. They also give you clues along the way to help...
It is a FANTASTIC geography and science unit study that takes from end of January till end of May (roughly). We really did enjoy it....Here's the site that will give you more info. Also ask on here and the ones of us who did it last year should be able to answer any queries....

Mary & Mary, I figure we can always form "teams" if we get more than ten participating families. Last year we had eleven families in the group, so Alice and I doubled up, which turned out to be convenient if one of us had a busy week and didn't get our photoperiod posted right away. I hope you'll join again--it wouldn't be the same without you!
Natalia, we had such a good time with this last year! Here are links to the threads about it if you'd like to get a sense of what it was like. My Kelly was born right at the end of the project, so I sort of dropped out at the end. But everyone else came through! It was so exciting to narrow down the possibilities week after week, gradually pinpointing where the mystery locations were.

Lissa,
Are my kids too young? Almost 10 and under? I'm a little daunted by this...I guess what I'm saying is, "Am I smart enough to do this?" isn't that sad to ask? But I looked at the stuff and it seems intimidating to me...is that because I'd be new to this?

Oh, Maria, I'd love to have you do it with us! (And you too, Natalia!) We did it last year when my daughter was 10. I did have to help her some. What was so cool was how much I learned myself doing it and helping her. The thing is we (the 4 Real moms who participated) all work together and you can ask questions about anything you don't understand or need resources for. If you signed up to do it yourself you would be looking for 10 mystery locations. The way we did it everyone had only one location that they were trying to keep track of which is very manageable. If you choose to do the work for all 10 locations that's fine, too, but you don't need to.

It will be good for me to go outside (forgive the pun) my comfort zone!

Yes, Maria, ditto everything Mary said. When we did it last year my oldest was 10. She was really my only child interested in sticking with it (though the younger girls drifted in and out). Kate really really loved it (and in fact it was she who reminded me of it today--with panic in her voice--"Did we miss the start, Mommy???").
Like Mary said, doing it as a group makes the project much more manageable. One math problem a week instead of ten.
What we did was make a chart for all ten mystery locations, and then each family posted their data every week (the one math problem I mentioned), and we put ALL the data on our chart.
Actually I guess it was two math problems each week, because we also charted our own photoperiod. (You use sunrise and sunset times to calculate how many minutes of light there was that day, one day a week.) That was another really fun aspect--watching our local photoperiod increase by ten or fifteen minutes each week! Seemed like the winter went by much faster than usual!
I would LOVE for you to join us, Maria!

Great Maria...so are we! I was hoping the Journey North notice would appear soon.
Maria,
I was sooooo clueless last year; if I could figure it out anyone can.

If you're in Maria, we're in. (Now, how about Chari's camping trip??? We're in......)
We're in, Lissa, if there is enough room.

I would like to join! We tried this on our own last year but it was too much trying to track all ten ourselves and we burnt out after a few weeks. I was very envious of your group

I'd like to try it this year too! You all looked like you were having so much fun with it last year and I'd love to tie something fun to Math for once.

We did this on our own last year and had fun with it (but I think it was because I did almost all the work). If there is room, can I join, too?
