Cay,
Thank you so much for sharing. This looks like a wonderful book. My husband and I are raising our 2nd set of children so to speak and with this 2nd set we are homesteading--kind of. I would say we are more like the Amish than 'todays normal family'(although far from Amish I am sure!). It has made such a difference. When I get a chance I hope to post on the homesteading thread.

I haven't seen this book before. Anne and her husband live next door to my Aunt Betty (not on a farm though - it's pretty posh neighborhood). I did not realize they had branched out as far as Lousiana!
I positively LOVE thier cinnamon sugar pretzels - too much in fact.  Dh got one yesterday while on a trip but didn't bring me back one!  They recently had opened some Auntie Anne's cafes here and we really liked them. There was one up the road from me that we homeschool moms would meet at but they all closed recently so we're kind of bummed. The pretzels stores are still open and plan to stay that way as far as I know. The cafes were just a trial thing but we are sad to see them go. They had good sandwiches and of course the pretzels are the best.
Some of you may wonder what the big deal is but we are very big on pretzels here (soft pretzels being my favorite) and having lived in other parts of the country I know that few places have them like we do. Hmmmm...I just might have to pop by the mall later today and get one!
Oh and Anne's husband has done free Christian counseling for years so it's makes perfect sense that he would offer it to the Amish - I'm not surprised but glad to hear it.
I'll have to get that book!

Anne grew up Amish but is, I guess, what they would consider a fallen-away Amish. God still works through her though.
With the fortune she's made, I guess they would live in a posh neighborhood. 
The soft, cinnamon-sugar pretzels are my favorite too.

I'm pretty sure the Beiler's are evangelical/fundementalist now.
Sadly many here don't even consider the Amish to be truly Christian - but then they think the same of us Catholics so we feel a kinship with the Amish since much of the criticism they get is along the same lines of what we get (too focused on tradition, listen to their bishops, don't really know what they believe etc.)
Oh and I don't mean to lump the Beilers into this kind of thinking because I really wouldn't know and if anything Mr. Beiler's outreach to them is certainly admirable.
But I was so disappointed and disgusted to hear a fundementalist family member of mine disdain the whole way the Amish had been so forgiving of the schoolhouse shooter. Her comment was "well it's not like it's real, it's just the way they were brought up". Honestly I was stunned but there's a common disdain for the Amish in general so it's actually not that surprising.
Oh dear I hijacked your thread Cay and actually I wanted to thank you for mentioning the book because I hadn't seen it before and plan to get a copy.

I had never heard of this business but it looks like a fabulous field trip. I'm sure this could easily fit as one of the Liturgical Year field trips, maybe for a pre-lent treat and to get ready for the plain old fasting pretzels.

And the UK . My 11yo and I went to a large shopping centre a few miles from us on Monday and noticed a pretzel place was opening soon (we particularly noticed because we like pretzels, though we have only ever had plain ones). Then I read Cay's blog and thought the name sounded familiar ... did a bit of googling and sure enough, it is Auntie Anne's! They have been franchised over here, apparently.
The Auntie Anne's-to-be is immediately opposite Krispy Kremes, which is also by way of being a favourite. I can see us needed to find excuses to go shopping

Oh my goodness, Auntie Anne's AND Krispey Kreme! You lucky woman. Do try the cinnamon sugar pretzel - I just got dh to try one a few weeks ago and now he's hooked.
